Hello all, I grew up in America with Coleman lanterns, and have used and in many cases still own, several lanterns and stoves, among them, full-size single and double mantles and Peak 1 (all prior to them being labeled "Duel-Fuel". I've also owned Peak 1 and larger two-burner stoves, again, all pre-Duel Fuel. Frankly, I don't recall preheating any of them. Is this because I only used Coleman fuel? Is it the Paraffin that requires preheating, or is preheating required because of a design issue? thanks, m
In answer to your question, yes and yes. Not design, though paraffin stove are designed for hotter vaporizing temps. The reason is the flammability of Coleman's fuel compared to, paraffin(kerosene). Also "Duel-Fuel" almost always means unleaded auto gas and Colman's fuel. The former to be used with extreme ventilation. Don't breathe the fumes!
Paraffin (=kerosene) is less volatile than Coleman and other, similar fuels. Hence it has to be pre-heated for a couple of minutes so that it's beyond the temperature needed for it to form a vapour. Coleman-type fuels require a much lower temperature for vapourisation and will do so quicker. Hence it generally doesn't need to be pre-heated, thus the Coleman Quik-Lite and Instant-Lite systems. BTW, it's dual fuel...
