Having read many posts about 28sec Domestic Heating Fuel being just kerosene, I decided to try some out. I ran a couple of Tillys and a couple of Bialaddins on it and it works very well indeed. Good bright light and no more smell than shop-bought paraffin/kero. It might be just my imagination, but it seems to burn brighter! Half the price as well. Steve.

Domestic heating oil @ 28secs is just kerosene, it comes out of the same tank at the suppliers..

Ray had some of this at Newark, from memory marked as Heating Oil (Kerosene). However, in the container, it didn't smell like kerosene being much more pungent - rather more like diesel to my nose.

However it burned just fine, exactly like kerosene and with no appreciable odour that I recall. Mind, I was a bit p*ssed by then...

You are right about the unburnt fuel smell David, it does smell more like diesel, but no significant smell when burning.

Oh yes, it stinks like nothing else, especially when it's soaked into a cushion in the caravan. I bought 2 gallons of paraffin when I first started lamp collecting, £7 each it cost me. Then I discovered 28sec kero and have used nothing else since. I had 25 litres of the stuff at Newark and burnt through about half of it with no problems to the lamps themselves. As for being brighter, I don't know about that, but I agree it doesn't smell any worse when it's burnt, even in wick lamps.

Crickey ! That's cheap, 4 litres of paraffin from my local ironmongers today will cost £7.99 ( £2 per litre ) ! I can collect 20 litres of 28sec self fill via pump from Rye oils for £25 ( 80p per litre ) :D  Not bad considering I'm not filling up a central heating tank of 500 litres + 8)

It's burns just fine too ;)

The things you do to smell kero Matt [-(

That's 2x 1 gallon drums at £7 each, so not much cheaper. Not when you can get the Kero at 80p a litre as you say, I think mine was about 85p or something. It was about 38 litres at £31 anyway. There's about 90p's worth in the cushion now. Smells nice in the caravan now.

I'll agree on the price and performance of heating oil. But I'm afraid the smell leaves a lot to be desired, you can't beat the smell of Paraffin. As for price see this recent reciept, also 10p a litre cheaper when purchasing 50 litres + as against £7.99 for 4 litre prepacked.

Hmm, pity their operations are limited to Sussex - that's a bit too far for me to go...

Locally, there's a garden centre selling it loose at, I think, 99p/l. That was on my way to work at one time so no problem then, but now it's right out of my way.

These days I get it from an allotment association not too far away...

Quite by accident I discovered that a petrol station near where I work sells kerosene (paraffin) through the pump at $1.91/litre. That is 1/3 less than the best I can get anywhere else down here and compares to:$1.61 for unleaded petro (gasoline); and
$1.59 for diesel... And it is more convenient than trying to get JetA1 from the aerodrome.

I'm heading off to work tomorrow with a 20 litre container!
