Hi Boater, I only ever use a very short soak (15 minutes max) in a very weak citric acid/warm water solution. I then wash off in soapy water, then rinse in fresh water. Next I dry completely in heat (oven) or sunlight and then rub over the brass with dry, very fine 00-00 grade wire wool. No liquid involved, and I use wire wool 00-00 grade that is not new! Second-hand (used before) 00-00 grade wire wool is almost soft enough wipe a baby's bum! This does not put scratches in the brass, and is also not introducing ammonia, as some brass polishes do. If I really want a mirror brass finish, I polish with "Autosol", which is almost ammonia free, but this is seldom neccessary. Hope this helps mate - Steve.

I normally use a polishing mop stuck on the spindle of a bench grinder. Kits to convert a grinder to a buffing machine are available on ebay.
