Hey Tony, Yes, right on; I've just coincidentally been taking photo's of my 2 J.C. Higgins lanterns; both shouldering one of the finished Tilley X 246'S I'd recently completed, a few weeks back. All being well, the Austramax 3/300 I'm hoping to get back into shape, will look as grand as it once did' as new; during the 70's. A great little lantern; I'm soon to be sorting out the re'enamelling for the little vent. Keep me posted, please. My external mail is down, it's going to take some sorting out, unfortunately; so I can only now, make contact, via CPL's mail. I should still be alright, there; shouldn't I ? Thanks, Regards, Jon.
Hi, & I do too, Gneiss. I've just spent a full day of disappointments, turning the remainder of the night (Possibly), into another Photo shoot ? I may be back in a few more hours, if that; batteries not being a problem/camera. The darn PC's playing up, it's gone on a go slow, so hit & miss, whether it'll re size what ever size images, I take from the ensuing jestering (No David Bailey), moi. No, I cant speak French, but I was swearing earlier; when the new Higgs's; Kamplite S4903 Generator, re-fit; actually gave me a few more laughter lines, by doing (to a fashion) exactly what I was hoping; "Huston, we have lift off". Yee Haaaarghhh.. . .... .. . Cheers for posting a reply, the J.C. Higgins Lantern (The Rocket) has been a very difficult and costly lamp to get going, the earlier shots were taken when I'd a dodgy generator, attached but not only that, I wrongly fitted it with a Heavy Duty, Coleman 21A; so I'd too small a sock, for the gases, which (so I was correctly told by Kyle/Jim Douglas Jnr)made the lamp and mantle, continually splutter & rumble, as well over heat, severely. Coleman #99's, or Lancaster 24 A's really work well, both extremely bright but I'd like to see if the Higgins/Roebuck Sears mantles, if this is what they're known as; work just as well ? I'd not want to put any of the lamps I've spruced up, at jeopardy of accumulating any new pockets of rust, but occasionally it's too tempting, to not take them out the back, when it's been snowing; it's usually one of my old Tilleys though, so just a good dry down then back to the airing cupboard, with the pump fully retracted, is good enough. It's a shame we can no longer see the shuttle, docking with the IST any more, I watched it twice, birthing; a faint chase on, the brighter ball of light in front, followed by the smaller craft behind, in pursuit. FANTASTIC site to behold, those Pioneers of newer frontiers (some journeys, just easily out weigh the risks; very salutable). Watch out for the 3/300 Austramax, and i'll watch out for those batteries. Jon.
Hi Tony, I took some photo's of my Austramax, I thought you'd just like to see the condition it's now in ? You do have the same one, if I recollect rightly; from scans you uploaded within CPL (Mottled white/ blue ash coloured vent)? I've had the lamp buried under lots of mail box's from deliveries, etc. All fettled up, long since back, now; but I didn't really know about photography, at that time; so just kept it under wraps. The pic's I took of the 3/300, separately; didn't seem too clear, when I went to re-size them, so there's just the one (a bit fuzzy, in quality), but the J.C Higgins, accompanied shots, went marginally better. Also, just for anyone else viewing; the Nautilus BBQ torch, pictured ; are sold at Aldi ATM, only £2.50 each (different colours supplied) I call it Nautilus (Naughty-less), because it doesn't burn my fingers (unlike lighters), but it does also resemble, Nemo's surf chariot.
