Can't fault the seller for trying. If I owned it and could get £1600 I wouldn't hesitate in parting company with it. Can't see it ever happening though.

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay but I'm sure if I offered it for nothing there would be plenty wanting it, even the ones who say it's a fake.

I only listed it with the high price tag to get it noticed,it could of sold for the price of a normal SDR otherwise. Someone said I was asking too much so I put it up another £100.00. It would need to be offered worldwide. I hope I can sell it sometime as I am starting to fall in love with the old beast.

I thought the point of listing something on eBay was to sell it, rather than get it noticed. Must be me, being old-fashioned again.

:-s :? Would you mind explaining the logic there? - it escapes me...

If you had ever listed something too cheap on Ebay and it had sold way under it's value you would know what I mean.

Remember a pictures says more than a 1000 shortenings.

I do know what you mean, but it really depends on the definition of value. It's not what you or I think it's worth, it's what someone is prepared to pay for it - two completely different things altogether.

I presume you'll be re-listing it for even more - maybe £2000 this time...

Someone messaged me saying it was an easy thing to make up and that I could be misleading new collectors into thinking it was something that it isn't and that the price was too high. That's why it went up another £100. Do you get it now?

Ok thanks David. I did try to write S.D.R. on avanced search but the search-machine cant find anything.
I had a longer break from CPL and didnt see it a month ago - so right now this is klingonsk to me.
Now I will look all the countrys lamps through to find the S.D.R. I want my picture when I hear 1600 money.

Well yes maybe I did but at the time it was not suggested that the lamp might be offered for sale and value was not considered. Average it certainly is not. I have not seen another like it and from the paper we have only the image of the Excellent seems to have a seperate pump and filler cap as this one does. Not the same tank or globe cage as an Excellent but otherwise it is pretty close.

I just called it as I saw it. No question this was made that way. The hood is unique to the lamp and not constructed like the other "Normal" SDRs it has an internal chinmey which has three holes to accept the burner. The pump tube has a raised boss in the tank and the fitting was inserted from the inside. The valve socket is the same as you find on table lamps ie without the self locating bush. So my take is that this is either a very short run original or possibly a working prototype. You have to also consider that it was found within the North London area and just maybe it was spirited out of the factory in the early 1960s when the factory was closing down which might suggest prototype perhaps.

Value is another matter. It is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay. With a lamp like this it is always a hard call to decide just how authentic it is. A home made bodge is practically worthless and the real thing as a one off unique item near priceless. I don't really know which this is but after handling it my feeling is this is the real deal and made in the factory. My opinion for what it is worth just based on many years of handling lamps. I might be wrong. It has been known but this time I don't think so. ::Neil::

I used to sell a lot of my ex stock off on eBay... telescopes worth £500 and more ALL at a starting bid of £0.99...

In my experience things sell for what they are genuinely worth.

I guess that's part of the risk of all auctions - both conventional and on-line. Prospective purchasers often have a vastly different idea of what an item is worth (to them) than the seller thinks they ought to be paying for it.

Of course, that's why it's possible to set a reserve price in all auctions. I think that might have been the correct way to go with the SDR rather than set an unrealistic starting price. Just my opinion...

Yeh think your both right a starting price of 1500 is more like a buy it now price but some numpty may just have gone for it so worth trying in the sellers eyes.
Ebay is a auction site so a reasonable starting price would have I am sure created more intrest

    cheers pete

This separate filler and pump hole from tilley is also seen one the early SL1 and the SP1 but both use the same tank with the sharp top edge neil does make me wonder if this SDR is of a similar time frame or designed by the same bloke at the factory is a strange feature

    cheers pete

    Hi !
£1500 or £1600 seems like an awfull lot for not alot ! at the end of the day its just an SDR lamp.

All this publicity is proberbly doing wonders for its street credability but it just don't do it for me !!
Remember that donut lamp Willis and Bates sold to someone in Southampton on ebay ( forget his name ) who paid something like £2500 and brought it to the stove and lamp gathering at Newark.

At least that lamp looked a bit different and felt like it could command a good price ! I still gulped at the final price !!!

but an SDR no I'm not convinced even the Blanchard lamp in cheshire or the Kelite like mine on ebay a while back never got to £500.

O well we'll have to wait and see if Borehamwood is the centre of the Metropalis.
