I have just got hold of what I think is a Tilley R1 Heater. I have changed all of the washers and fired it up.

It is a bit of a pain to light, so I think I need to make a pre heater cover for it.

The question I want to ask is what position does the air intake need to be. Pointing to the front, side or rear? Or does it not make any difference?

It makes no difference except aesthetics. Position it so the cover works.

I use one of loco7lamp's Bialaddin-style pre-heaters on my R1s which work fine indoors.

    Cheers

I thought this was something that was going to be put to the test at Newark earlier this year?

My guess is it might make a difference if there were a draft from a particular direction.

We did test the positioning of the air intake and it made no difference where it was.

The link below shows an R-1 with it's draught shield, when the shield is used it draws up the heat from the meths torch and that usually means that only only one meths torch is needed, unless it's really cold of course, Jeff.
