I am a Coleman lamp and lantern guy, so when I stopped at a junk store I found a 1931 rugged 228 lantern, original glass with the word Coleman punched in the collar. Considering myself lucky, I went outside and on my way back to the car walked by all the junk they keep outside. I looked up on a top shelf and saw this total unknown to me, chrome dish with a weird font. I looked at it and noticed it had "Tilley Made in England" on the side and price $25 (I might add I collect many English things) so I had to have it even though I was not sure what it was. A quick search on this site and found it was a 1954-56 R1 but missing the mantle. I contacted Neighbor Al and he sent me a ss mantle, SP1 gasket set and after a quick rinse of the font, I had it going and now use it for heat in my outside shop. It is in amazing shape, funny where you find these things, it was found in Clinton BC Canada, which is about as small of a town as you can get.

Tilley had a distributorship in Ontario from about mid 1930's to about mid 1950's, office was in Toronto I think. I mostly see Tilleys show up in Ontario, but occasionally see them in BC and more rarely in the northern parts of the prairie provinces. Nice save of a well made heater, good thing is parts are still fairly common to keep it running.

Price is about normal for Canada as most shops don't know much about Tilley appliances here. Get a membership on the forum to access the paperwork section and there should be an instruction sheet for the heater, if not I can send a copy.

Hello Bob and welcome aboard!

That was a lucky find and it's in good nick, I also use a Tilley R-1 in my shed, it gives a good heat and like all Tilleys it's fuel efficient.

It's great to see yet another fine old Tilley restored to working order!   Jeff.
