So I picked up a red 246B at a flea market a few weeks back, been a bit busy and am only getting round to looking at it now. Got to say it's in pretty good condition, but then it's an '80's example, so pretty new in the grand scheme of things. Tiny bit of rust on the cap, fair bit on the chromed cage. Paint on the fount is pretty well intact. I don't like it. Specifically I don't like it being red. How much of a sin would it be to strip & polish the fount and spray the cage black with heat-resist? I spend a lot of time out at living history and military vehicle events, colourful things don't really fit in and I'd like this to be a 'user,' basically because I wouldn't be that terribly fussed if anything happened to it. I'd be a bit more miffed about the 300x
Clean it up and get it working then bung it on Ebay and with that buy something more fitting for your vintage days...
If the chrome isn't coming off in big flakes as some do then you may find that it will come up quite nicely in about ten minutes with a brass suede brush... As for painting/stripping the tank I wouldn't worry too much, I'm making a pink one for my wife If you do decide to strip it then at the very least protect the brass with a good quality car wax.

Indeed, I think maybe tomorrow or Thursday evening I'll take a little run to somewhere a bit more scenic than the wheelie bin in the back yard and take a few flame pics.
Dare I suggest a fount respray in NATO olive, that would suit your other interest. Failing that, have you thought of a vapalux M320 in the same colour? Very military, that.
