I'm working with a team of collectors on a new Coleman collectors book. Currently I'm researching the 241 series. As these were largely exported to other parts of the world they almost never show up on our side of the pond. If anyone has one please email me with the model and the date numbers. I may also want some images from you to study its particulars. The images will only be used for the research. Thanks, Terry Marsh tgmarsh@noctrl.edu
Hi Terry, I am having a 241 A like Neils one http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/1824 from 1955 If you want to have some pics, let me know Karli from Germany
I had a feeling my lantern of that overall appearance was a 243 but thought I'd check anyway. Just as well I did because it's a 241A:- Clearly not one of the world's finer examples, I recall it burned quite nicely when I tried it. Sadly the bottom of the tank is covered in cosmetic rust so a date from there is going to be unlikely. Interestingly, perhaps, it's impressed with the former owner's company name and, presumably, serial number:- I recall doing an internet search for them but I don't think there was anything to be found. Let me know, please, if further details or images are required. Edit: The date's marked on the side of the tank with the logo etc. - 1 50 - so January 1950, 4 months older than me. We're both showing our age a bit...
David. Yes a 241 for sure. I can see the finish is not great but is the tank painted or plated? Makes a difference because 241 is green and 241A is nickel plate. Please tell me it is green paint because to date that is a model we have never seen. ::Neil::
Well, I could tell you it's green paint, Neil, but I'd be lying - it's definitely nickel-plated and has 241A on the collar. W. Ottway and Co. Ltd. were high quality optical instrument manufacturers operating under that title until 1968. Whether this was part of the factory equipment or something retailed by them is difficult to say. The quality of the impressing of the company name and serial number might tend to suggest the latter. I was going to faff about with the 555GL next but I'll bump this little fella to the top of the fettling pile...
Better yet, why don't you forge ahead with the 555GL and simply send me the 241. I'll kindly clean it up and return pictures of the end product. Will
David. Oh well the search continues. This 241 series of lanterns is difficult to track. So far I have not found any of them in a catalogue. We have a couple of flyers detailing 241A and 241G and two price lists from 1950 and 1951 which gave us the difference between 241 and 241A. As yet we have no information at all on 241K except for two examples clearly marked as such. So we are most interested in any examples of these types with dates but what we really need is paper. ::Neil:: ::Neil::
Karli - The 1955 date on yours largely closes the gap I have in dates between the 241A and the next model 241G. What is the month please and can you tell me the country from which it came to you? Would you please take two full side images of the lantern from the tip cleaner and side opposite (where the valve would be) and two additional images of the of the whole side of the lantern showing the two flat sides of the burner with the top screw, bail, vent, and globe removed? Please send me larger (~2 MB) size files of the above to my email. Then I can enlarge them and see details. David - If you would also send me four images of yours as requested above from Karli, that would be great. Thanks, Terry
