    Hello folks.

My 1st post so go easy on me will you..

I'm from Fife in Scotland and have been dabbling with Bialaddin, Tilly & Vapalux lamps for ages now. Mainly just a strip clean and rebuild with new seals etc and getting them up and running. Mostly successful 1st time. One of the lamps I rebuilt last year (worked super) has now stopped working and the fuel is burning outside the mantle producing some flame and very little light. Good heat though!! It's out in our friends house in Portugal..

Am I right in saying a new Vap' tube ass'y should sort it out? Everything else looks nice and clean etc.. Holds pressure well too. The model is an M 315.. Quite a nice one. I suspect the lamp has been switched off by using the pricker / valve assy and might have damaged the jet hole. Looks like quite a heavy spray / jet from the tube.

    Thanks in advance.

    Alex Black

Sounds very much like it from what you say - it would be the first thing I'd change, anyway...

Hello Alex and welcome aboard!

The most common cause of that problem, is that the vapouriser's jet has become enlarged and if so, then the cure is a new vapouriser, Jeff.

Don't forget to check air tubes for spiders, wasps as any reduction in air flow could cause same results

    Thanks jeff & Graham.

The lamp is out in Rural Portugal and obtaining parts almost impossible by post etc so I will take a vap' tube out with me. About to call basecamp now.

I did have a quick look at the airtubes but did not dismatle to clean / blow out. I will do this 1st and if any is debris present I will try firing it before replacing the vap' ... If it's ok then I have a spare vap' tube. No big deal.

Manyy thanks again to all.

I have also a nice Tilly sitting here I will need to get working. Just doesn't burn nice so a quick strip is on the cards to see why. Keep you posted.

It's an X-246-A and there will be a date stamp on the base plate.

Thanks again Jeff. I have now noted the model.

Mantles now ordered for it along with the vapour tube for my 315 Bialaddin. Hopefully all will be good then.

Looked for date stamp on the base of the Tilly when on the phone to Basecamp and could not find! lady said it could be early model if no date stamp. I don't know! Hey ho..

Hello Alex, if you look at that Tilley tank, the words model X246A are stamped on it just to the right of the word Tilley.

There will be a date stamp on the base plate, but you may have to use a magnifying glass to see it.

My X-246-A is stamped 1063XA, which is OCtober 1963, Jeff.

It's an X246A and it will be date stamped. The A version of 246 was introduced some years after Tilley started to date stamp all their lamps. Quite small numbers and letters in the base plate and often almost obscured by the paint but they will be there you just need to look carefully. ::Neil::

Many thanks guys. Found the date etc. On base covered with gold paint.

No model info' I can see though. Def' nothing beside the Makers name stamp on the tank.. Looks like the cage ass'y has been renewed with another and modified to fit.

Hey ho. I only need this one to work. It's heading out to portugal too.

    Cheers..

Some of these did not have the model stamped beside the name stamped on the tank side. Makes no difference though because it is still X246A. What is the date stamp? ::Neil::

Carefully remove the paint and still can't read the date. Try some solvent next and my magnifying glass...

    Not hopeful though.

No worries though 'caus I have the lamp running fine now so it will be Portugal bound soon...

    Thanks all.
