After reading so many other forum member’s trip reports and photos from their part of the world, I thought it about time to show some pictures of New Zealand. Here are some photos of a recent trip I did with my family into Glenthorne High Country Station, between Lake Coleridge and the Southern Alps in Canterbury, near where we live. As you can see from the following photo, access is by 4WD, to the old Forest Service Research Station that has been turned into a basic accommodation facility. It has gas for cooking and hot water but no electricity or cell phone coverage, yippee! So a lantern and a hiking stove had to come along for the trip. Fording the river to the research station. The old Harper Base Research Station at 700 m asl. Wild flowers around one of the out buildings at the station. Welcome Swallow on the clothes line were numerous in the area. The Coleman 236 1954 lantern we used to light the station at night.
On the first evening after dinner, we walked along the road in what was a chilly wind. Despite the wind, the sunset was lovely and I have tried to capture the setting in the following pics. Unfortunately I could not get any pics of the numerous hares we disturbed. Looking back up the Avoca Valley near the research station Next day we walked along Lillian Stream to Lake Lillian where we spent a good part of the day. Lake Lillian with The Spurs Range behind at 1981 m asl
Picnic lunch is complete with a good brew of tea, helped here with a Coleman exponent, feather 442. Here are a series of pics showing the panoramic view from the hill above the research station, of the Avoca and Harper Rivers. Showing Mount Olympus 2097 m asl in the distance, the pines below hide the research station. Being summer the Avoca River is in low flow.
Here is the final photo of the Wilberforce River valley that feeds into Lake Coleridge and the Rakaia River. This valley is accessed from lower Glenthorne Station.
