I'm not that fond of bagpipe music, but I enjoyed this video! Jeff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4aUPC0zMok
Wish we could get them in Aberdeen next Hogmanay Jeff, they'd be a big improvement on what we had Tuesday night. My main gripe every year is that we don't even get Auld Lang Syne after the bells, it's just straight into the squibs!
Hello Jean, they are a lively bunch. In Shetland Yule and Neurday (Christmas and New Year) are not celebrated so much nowadays, the biggest celebrations are at the various Up Helly Aa fire festivals. The link below is for the Lerwick festival, but there are many others. http://www.uphellyaa.org/
Thanks for that Celtica link Me and the Scottish wife loved it lots; really cheered us up after a very wet and stormy Hogmanay. Thanks. Steve.
I love a good Bag and drum . I found a bunch of British military competitions on U tube.As a matter of fact I like all good marching bands and drill teams. I grew up with a drum and bugle core practicing in my neighbors back yard. Dan
But they're not very Scottish, are they? I think I must have turned into my Old Man because every clip of them on YouTube sounded exactly the bloody same - bah! Still, buxom lasses in mini-kilts...
Haha very good Surfing around I found this scottish musician with a bad breath http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-Op1Mng4oY Claus C
Almost as good as the original. Bon Scott, the original singer with AC/DC played the bagpipes on one of their early tracks - can't remember which one at the moment and it's too late to faff about searching for it. Maybe in the morning... Edit: It's a Long Way to the Top (If you Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)
Saw them at the Music machine (Camden palace) in the 70s and that was the venue where he was last seen on a bender before his death from alcohol poisoning. Also saw the heavy metal kids there and front man Gary Holtun was offered Scott's job when he died but he declined because of his acting career. Holtun himself went more or less the same way (drink and drugs).
AC/DC are one of my fave bands & have been since the late 70's , "Ride on" & "It aint no fun waiting round to be a millonaire" plus so many more 8) Mad , bad & dangerous to know Stu
I don't think much about my old granddaddy from peterhead anymore but when I hear this pipe stuff I just know his blood is coursing through my veins. cheers jim
Next Tuesday - bu&&er! - missed it again. Maybe 2015, assuming I can work out how to get to Lerwick...
Actually, I think we should have a full-blown (probably would be!) lampie and stovie meet up at Jeff's next January... Does it get light at all up there this time of year, Jeff?
Hello David, if the sky is clear then there is about 6 hours of daylight at this time of year, but that's a big if. Traveling to Shetland is very expensive, so it's best to come here in June or July when there is at least a chance of decent weather, Jeff.
Yes Jeff that what puts John and I off travelling up but we would really like to see your lovely islands. We have been to Orkney once and would like to go back there and research family history. My Dad's Grandad came down from Orkney.
I checked it out. There are two ways I can fly to Shetland from the two local (north-east England) airports:- - fly to Heathrow, transfer to Gatwick, fly to Glasgow and from there fly to Lerwick. - fly to Amsterdam then fly to Edinburgh and then fly to Lerwick. No wonder it's expensive! Realistically, I think I'd simply have to drive to either Glasgow or Edinburgh and fly direct from there...
Hello David, if you are going to drive to Scotland, then you could also tour the highlands and then take your car on the ferry to Orkney and tour there and then another ferry to Shetland. Or take your car on the ferry from Aberdeen direct to Shetland and then tour Orkney and the highlands on your way back. The public transport up here is very basic, so a car is required to really see the place, Jeff.
Take a drive and enjoy our far northern territories! You may need a sledge and pack dogs by the time you reach the land of the Shalties but i'm sure Jeff could lend you his Alec
It's all worth a visit David and if you are in the Aberdeen area, then a drive through Deeside up to Braemar is well worth the effort. Jeff.
Does seem a nice part of the world, but as the crow flies, I'm actually nearer to Switzerland than Aberdeen
Then there's no contest Ray and according to the weather forecast we may actually match them for snow! Anyway, you were already invited last year - maybe this year?
