Did anyone here get this Tilley LT1? It is slightly different from the others I have seen. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380848845835
Thats the top price i've seen for one yet! As you say, there are a few small differences to the usual ones of that derivative. Alec
Not me - I've already got two! I also noticed the differences, particularly the strut between the tank and the fuel feed pipe, the handle and the reflector/heatshield.
The globe cage is the earlier type with a centre strut and I seem to remember Neil saying that as far as he knew the LT1 didn't use this type of cage, so maybe this is an early LT1. Of course it is possible that someone just swapped the cage. I notice as well that the tank has "Tilley" stamped into it - does that make it an early tank?
It's sufficiently different to make me wonder if maybe someone has decided to reproduce these. I can't see how the handle and boss are fixed to the tank. The small nut on what might be a threaded stud looks odd...
I saw that and I thought it was probably a fake. Did anyone notice the date of it? If the tank is dated before 1975 then it is a "wrong un" for sure. LT1 did not use the earlier globe cage for the simple reason that the LT1 lamps were made in the late 1970s and into the 1980s after the change in the globe cage. They are also identical because we know that London Transport bought the parts from Tilley in a single batch purchase so there should be no variations. ::Neil::
Well that would make [url=http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/48 a fake because the tank is dated July 1990. On the other hand it's identical to the other one shown in the Gallery (save for a missing reflector on mine). If it is a fake then it's a bloody good copy and it's hard to imagine anyone bothering to do all that work for so little financial return - I've seen one go for as little as £35 on eBay. If I was faking lamps, I could probably think of others that could be reproduced with a far greater liklihood of a decent profit. It would probably help if those of us who have these could post 'em in the gallery along with the tank date...
And one of mine with a 4/91 dated tank. Either a replacement tank or the very very last batch. Will check the others in daylight. Alec.
Early 1990s is quite possible. A lot were made around or just after the kings Cross fire and were never put into service. I remember seeing a batch of around 30 on a car boot stall around then which were brand new. Guy wanted £30 a pop so I didn't buy one and have been regretting that ever since. I only gave them a post 1977 date because that is when the later globe cage was introduced but late 1980s and early 1990s is perhaps better. ::Neil::
Thanks, Neil. Given the state of my 1990 example I linked to above, I think it's reasonable to say it's seen a fair bit of service! I don't think I'd swap it for an unissued one, though...
