Pretty much the same as when lighting a paraffin lamp (the iron also run on paraffin). Pump the iron a bit (valve closed/off, of course), let it stand in the upright position and fill the meths for preheating via the spout that sticks out on the right side of the iron. Light the alcohol. When it's about to burn out, open the control spindle, and the iron should go into action. Pump it up well. Heat output is actually controlled with the control spindle rather than with the pressure, so you can pressurise it well. But a small tank means not so many actual strokes.
thanks for the information as i do have a few of the lanterns so i should beable to figure it out 'thanks again 'i will let you know how it goes'dean
You're welcome. I think you will figure it out as soon as you start. Otherwise I can post some pics of when I light an iron of this type, but it's really quite straightforward so I don't think it's needed.
well first i need to say is yep i did add some alcohol in the small spout as you mentioned but where do you lite the thing i tried so many ways and the alcohol wouldn't lite'plus the fact it has more leaks than a barn roof ;the pump works great but it wont hold pressure so i used a 0 ring thinking that would help but still it wont besides the little screws that is on the back side of the tank leaks as well so yep i used a 0 ring; i did fill the tank about half full and pumped it as you mentioned than added some alcohol but still wouldn't catch as the leaks so now if i cant find the correct gaskets or seals it will be just a show item but darn this will be the first to get lite 'as i said it leaks around the little screw that screws in to the tank ;any thoughts i sure would appreciate as these things are so rare ;i am the type of collector of these find old things like to at least once seem them to work than in the shelve with my others ;if i could find a bad one just for the parts that would be great ;again thanks for your help ;
The alcohol is lit by placing a match near the spout where it is poured in. With the pump I find that an o-ring often fails to make a good seal and a proper washer is usually needed. Is the pump tube also filling up with paraffin after pumping? If so the washer in the non-return valve at the end of the pump tube may need replacing. Do you mean it leaks where the fuel pipe attaches to the tank? I would avoid adding mixing alcohol and other fuels with the paraffin as it can be dangerous in this iron.
thanks for the reply and yes it leaks where the screw threads in to the back of the tank ; as far as any liquid in the pump housing no; i did try to lite the thing there at the spout but it didn't catch; i use heet its like alcohol or at times dry gas i don't mix any thing with it;as a rule the 0 rings do work but it seems this time it isnt going to so where to find the correct gasket that goes behind the screw that threads in to the tank ;the seal around the pump was hard so i was able to get it out and yes again i used a 0 ring it wont hold pressure due to the leak in the tank ;i might try a gasket type silicone that seals leaks such as gas leaks and even around the water pump in cars ;if that does work well it seems it will be a show item ;finding the correct items needed will be hard even to find another iron that's just a parts one as the prices are darn high ;thanks i will let you know how it goes ;
It has a banjo fitting againt the tank, so all you need to get it tight there is two thin, but firm gaskets. (One on each side of the banjo, of course.) Usually you have copper or aluminum washers on banjo fittings, but it might also be fibre. I can't remember which one they used on the iron, probably fibre, but copper should also work without any problems. Just go to a petrol station and I'm sure they'll have two in a suitable size for you. I can't agree there. The DN250 is a very common iron, and the prices are generally quite low. Especially if you just want a scrappy one for spares. Unless you don't have a specific and rare model? They are a bit heavy, so the shipping from UK to USA might be a bit high, but considering you can get a decent iron for probably around $10, give or take, it might all still be for an acceptable total.
thanks im will try to find the correct washers if im correct here when i removed the fitting off the back side of the tank i only saw one washer that was on the back side where the threaded screw goes though ;i might have a few here ;yes i do at times check the bay for a parts iron but the ones i do find are very nice and in excellent condition plus the prices are quite high ;there was one i thought just a parts iron but i cant seem to find that listing any more but i will check ;it would be great to see the iron working but in time;if you can could you explain how to get the thing to pre burn once you add the alcohol as it didn't go very well yesterday i even lite the match close to to the spout and still the alcohol wouldn't burn this so different from the lanterns i have here ;thanks again for the information '
yep your correct as i did find a few listed for parts now to find out if the seller will ship to the states thanks again ;
yep i did find one for parts;now to wait for the correct shipping rate and wait for the arrival ;least i will have a few extra parts but in the mean time i will try to find the washers you mentioned ;thanks again so much for your help but now to figure how to pre heat it
Stormie, There is a full set of instructions posted in the Reference Library and also a copy of the general instructions card. It may be worth your while down-loading them.
Sorry Steve, but unfortunately he can't see them. Otherwise I would have posted a link in my first reply. The reference library is subscribers only
no problem guys as yep i was to figure it out an after changing the seals the old thing lite up nice and yes i can see very well even at my age of 64 thanks to everyone who helped me here ;wow did it heat up yes i used the wrong liquid to fire it up but again going by the way others explained it lite just fine again thanks so much ;
yep i went to the local hardware store here and they had the items i needed though a tad to small but the right size drill bit did it and after adding the alcohol than open the valve wow did it ever get so hot and yep i did find another one for parts and yes i sure could use a few so it worked out well again im not on the box 24-7 to read the replies but again i want to thank the ones who did respond and help me ;dean
well guys thanks for all your help;as i did put the iron back together and yep i even pre heated 3 times just to make sure but once i opened the valve i could hear like a spray coming through but than noticed raw kerosene at the bottom;so where did i go wrong and yes with a 1/2 of kerosene and pumped it up several times every thing is sealed and no leaks that i can find so any im put sure would be appreciated it and yes im not sure if any of you members know dan d hes a super guy and a good friend here in the states his dad passed away yesterday so if any of you guys know him a kind word im sure he would sure appreciate it
