Hi all I am a regular on CCS. I have just picked one of these up today [Primus 1001] knowing nothing about lamps! I presume Nrv, pump, caps etc are the same threads etc as stoves and parts are interchangeable? Is there a source of mantles and what are the pitfalls to look out for? Many thanks Nick
Congratulations in getting one of the best lanterns there is. Yes, all of what you mention there is interchangeable with most of the common paraffin stoves from Sweden, both domestic and camping ones. Actual looks of things might differ, but they generally still fit. E.g. domestic stoves normally don't have a pressure relief in the actual fuel cap, but they still work, while camping stoves like the 210 has almost identical caps. The mantles should be two-ties which are open in both ends. No pre-tied whatsoever! I think Hytta.de is a good source for those. Look under Luxor or Aida. E.g. Aida 300/400 HK (which is practically the same as CP) works fine on Primus two-tied lamps. No real pitfalls that I can think about. It's a pretty straight forward system. No adjustable air gaps or other things to tune-in or otherwise complicate things. If it doesn't work right, it's generally just a matter of a coked vaporizer and/or a worn jet (as long as you still got a tight and pressurized system otherwise). The vaporizer is the easiest to clean out, and the jet is easily changed.

Hi Nick, these are a lovely Primus lantern, you are lucky to get one, Christer has given you the good info for the lamp, i find with mine the regular size Tilley mantles are a bit small for this lamp and the ones Christer suggested work well, if this is your first lamp, enjoy, Frank
I have been looking in the lamp reference library and it appears that the mantle is a sort of tube shape? Open at both ends,is it possible to adapt a Tilly type mantle for use? Could someone post a detailed picture of the mantle for me. Further inspection of the lamp reveals that one of the hood clips is missing but I can live with that. Will the chunk of missing glass prove to be a problem? I assume replacement glass is like rocking horse poo! I will start to fettle her up at the weekend generally its quite clean in the vapouriser burner area so hopefully it will be ok with a change of washers a new filler cap and an NRV pip. Having paid the princely sum of £5 for it I will not be to sad to spend out a bit of cash on getting her going! Pictures to follow when time allows. Nick
You'll probably end up breaking them as, the ones I buy at least, are pre tied and won't stretch... Bialaddin mantles usually come non pre tied and have a slightly larger opening so you may get those to fit.
Hello there! You might check out Base Camp. They use to carry mantles specifically for the old Primus 1001. They were/are a bit pricy but... Very few thing come free in this world!
No need to do that, unless the Base-Camp mantles actually are real Primus original, which I doubt... If they are, I'd gladly pay even more than they ask. The mantles that I suggested above from Hytta.de works very well for this lantern. Here's the latest "Hytta mantle" (I can't remember which actual brand it was, but I think Aida) I used a month ago. I think it shaped up good enough, and I can't complain about the light output. This one is on a 1015, but that's exactly the same burner as the 1001 use, so no difference there:
Thanks christer I am in the process of ordering some Aida 300/400 mantles from Germany and will let you know how I get on. You say absolutely no pre tied mantles what do you mean by this? How does the burner come off to get the mantle on or does it just slip over from the top? heers Nick
Nick, it slips over from the top. And that's also why I said no pre-tied mantles. Like e.g. the normal Tilly. I know that it's possible to loosen the pre tied end, but it will seldom be a good result, and it's too much fiddling involved when there already is mantles available with loose strings in both ends. Keep us posted, and let us see it lit.

Longilly I know! Unclean Lamp pox! I bought this lamp with the idea of selling it on, but I could not resist the challenge of getting it going, seeing that I probably have most of the bits I need. DOH!!!!! I do actually have a couple of Tilly lamps but this Just caught my eye or should I say the price did. Mantles have been ordered! Cheers Nick
I have tried Tilley mantles on this burner and they don't work. They shrink too much and don't heat the generator enough to sustain vaporisation. ::Neil::
Thanks for the advice Mackburner. The mantles have turned up from Germany and I now need to sort out the needle some how, Do I need it? Also need Graphite packing for the regulator spindle or it could get a bit embarrassing. Nick
You can use PTFE or TEFLON for gland packing. Best is Teflon string from Ace Hardware in the US but you can use PTFE tape for gas (Yellow roll) twisted into a string and shoved in the stuffing box. PTEF stands a deal of heat and makes an excellent packing for lamp valve glands. ::Neil::
Theoretically you don't need it, but it makes life a lot easier. The jet usually needs pricking every now and again and if the internal pricker is not there it means you have to disassemble the burner to get at the jet. I believe you can get needles from Base Camp and they are also available from Fogas. Part number 6131.
