I've heard of problems with new some Tilley vapourisers BUT I have not just a brand new Tilley vapouriser but a new Bialaddin one too that simply don't work! I've tried both on several lamps now and the results are always the same, poor light, flames outside the mantle and flaring if you take the lamp outside in the wind. Looking at them I can't see any difference, but it seems to me that the hole must be enlarged.. Why would this be so on brand new vapourisers? And can anything be done to make them usable?
Is this really a brand new vapouriser or NOS (new, old stock)? I ask because, as far as I'm aware, Bialaddin hasn't been used as a trademark/brand since 1968...
I just purchased a new vaporiser this week from Tilley for my X246 Stormlight. To my surprise when I received it I found that the needle looked as though it had been broken and repaired. The stem appears to have been joined together in a fairly rough manner, with a remnant of welding snot still very clearly apparent. My first thought was that it was a reconditioned item, sold as new. I contacted Tilley by email, was advised that the needles are made in 2 parts. My original item, that I am replacing, does not seem to have been made in that way. The joint will be ideal for catching and accumulating crud. Does Tilley's explanation ring true? Thanks, Ian.
Hello Ian, that is typical of the poor quality of parts which Tilley now sell, so it probably is true. If the old cleaning wire is still okay then i suggest that you use it, Jeff.
To the best of my knowledge the "bad joint" acts to prevent the spring from sticking in the Vaporiser, and is deliberate.
Hello Gavin, that's true, but the older cleaning wires were neatly made and the even earlier ones did not have a joint, Jeff.
thank you gents. my original is now a pifteenth too short, think I might have done that whilst cleaning the tip, but I'll keep it while I try the new one for a while. Ian.
