    Hi,

i have a Tilley guardsman X246. When under pressure, i can see a small leakage where the valve is screwed into the tank.
There seems to be a collar between the valve and the tank. Am i right? and if yes, does this collar/gland need a seal.
Being a complete newcomer I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me.
Don´t want to start fiddling with things before i understand what i´m doing.

    Thanks

    Dave

Yes, this outer collar allows you to get control knob in a comfortable position between the legs of the frame. The outer collar itself doesn't have a washer or form part of the seal...

However the control cock asembly has a washer under that that acually forms the seal against the top of the tank when it's all tightened down.

When you assemble these you screw the control cock into the outer collar until its base comes all the way through and is proud of the outer collar. You then screw the outer collar plus control cock into the lamp with the washer in place.

If someone hasn't already posted some by the time I get back in tonight I'll take a few pictures that help explain it better.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I'm sure others will have their preferred order of assembly but this is the one that works for me.

The control valve, the collar and the sealing washer.

I screw the collar onto the control cock so that about 2mm or so of the stop cock protrudes from the collar.

    Fit the washer.

Then screw the entire assembly into the tank using the collar. Be careful the two parts don't rotate relative to each other.

Then with a bit of fiddling and a few choice words you can set the control knob exactly where you want during the final tightening. I promise I didn't cheat here for the photo!

There should be no need to use tools here, a tight "finger tight" is enough to obtain a good seal.

Sadly I've seed a few lamps now that have been assembled incorrectly in their past life and the outer collar has been screwed all the way down so tight that it can't be removed without damaging it :(

    I Hope this helps...

PS. The chances are you'll find your washer will be stuck to the bottom of the hole in the tank. They are rarely obliging enough to come out attached to the control cock base.

    Excellent...

You'll find they are nice reliable lamps, and when not quite as filthy as the one in my photo look good too
