While in a local antique shop yesterday, I found a wonderful old AGM 2-burner stove. I posted this on the other site. However, I forgot to mention two lanterns I also found but did not buy. One was a Coleman desk lantern with a milk-glass shade. It looked to be in fairly good condition but I did not look too closely. The other was an AGM lantern. Green fount and shade. This is in excellent condition but needed a generator tube. What do you think? Should I go back and buy them? Each was under $50.
Well yes I guess you should. Even modern shades are around $40 a pop so you can hardly go wrong and if there is an original shade on just one then at $100 they are a steal. ::Neil::
Well, the Coleman was a circa 1917-1920 lamp, almost complete. A letter from Coleman quoted the missing parts for about $5 in 1999. The man wanted $149.00 for it. The AGM was a later model that had been repainted and I assume it was in the junk shop because it would not run. He still wanted $39.00 for it. I passed on both of them. Just not a lampie.
Hi Sparky: A parts Quick-Lit for $149.00. Insane!!!!. I still see them for under $20.00 on occasion. A nice one under $40.00. (this is out and about, not on E-bay.) Mike...
Yep, he seems to have lost touch with reality. Other items in his shop are reasonably priced but I guess the age of this lamp made him see dollar signs.
So not $50 each then as you said first. Even with a period shade $149 is way too much for a QL. The old shades are worth perhaps $80 to $100 on a good day and you might expect to pick up a plain one for under $40. CQ lamps are only worth $20 a pop and have to be in fantastic condition to be worth more. Coleman made around 6 million of them and they were well made so a lot have survived. One of those cases where age is not a guide to value. Well left I think. ::Neil::
Neil At the Madison convention they were having a hard time getting a starter bid on three CQ's Finally someone took them for a five dollar bid.If I hadn't flown there they would be in my basement. Dan
Yes I remember those. I might have bought them too if I did not have to fly back here and they were not worth the postage cost. Shame really as they are for sure a very good lamp which nearly always restore to burn well. What else can you buy that will give that much light for the price they went for? ::Neil::
Reproduction Coleman #329 shades can be bought through Leacock. They have them plain white, green cased, or decorated. $50-60 if memory serves me. Bob
Yeah - I could do with around half-a-dozen of those shades over here! Can't see that happening any time soon, though...
