Hi I have Vapalux and Tilley lamps Both have chips in the hoods Just wondering the best way to restore / repair Can the chips be sorted or re finished etc Thanks for any thoughts Simon
This is an issue that has vexed us for years. A couple of collectors have tried re-enamelling kits - one with conspicuous success described on CPL somewhere - but it seemed quite an involved process and I'm not sure the kits are available in the UK. There was also someone investigating re-enamelling in Poland although this seems to have come to nought. Basically, the easiest solution is to find a better hood, although with continued use, it'll eventually end up in the same condition as the one you have now...
Chips are usually left as a sign of reverence to age ... But if you want to go the whole hog you can have them sand-blasted and re-enamelled (if you can fid someone to do it); or You can do that yourself if you've got the gear; or You can get some VERY high temperature paint of approximately the same colour and patch the chip. I've had mixed success with this method. I've had best success with VHT-brand Flame Proof but the colours are restricted.
Hi Simon, Another member from Stevenage I see. If you want to pop round some time and have a look at my collection you are welcome to do so It is usually not worth the cost of re-enamelling lamp tops unless they are rare. Can you post some pictures of your lamps. Regards, James.
Yes I noticed you are pretty close. James' collection will be worth a visit. Some pretty nice stuff there going on the lamps posted. Not far from me either. Maybe 15 miles across country. Visitors always welcome here. ::Neil::
Ah yes. I had a collector of the Australian persuasion admiring that piece of work last week. Best if you make it a day when I am here. Easier to see the pile if I am here to unlock things. ::Neil::
Hi James Thank you for the offer that sounds great I have tried to message you but am struggling the drop down does not stay down possibly as I am using an android pad, I am away from home till Sunday evening so will message then, I am in webb rise Cheers Simon
My suggestion is to not bother re enameling. Keep the old hoods for show, particularly if they are in good condition, and buy a grotty one off the net or somewhere for burning purposes. I have a couple of sacrificial hoods, one Tilley and one vapalux.
