Makes me wonder, if these latest Petromax lanterns are made in Germany, why isn't it stamped on the lantern instead of Reg Germany? Perhaps they are assembled in Germany using parts made in China, or perhaps the box the lantern comes in is made in Germany? To the best of my knowledge the last Petromax lanterns were made in Germany sometime in the early 1970's.
I was really interested to know not sure if I will get much more info out of them they say produced in Germany ..... thought I would share anyway Cheers Simon
Simon. It is a well known fact in the industry that where a product is assembled is the country of origin. When Hipolito in Portugal, where Petromax was made until the year 2000, where closed down the production moved to China. The parts or the lamps are made by Kaiping Silveray in China today. I do not know if Pelam/Petromax buys the parts or complete lamps but if they buy the parts in China and assembles them in Germany they can claim it to be made in Germany. It is up to you if you say it is German or Chinese but for me it is Chinese made. About 100% of the lamp is made in China. The glass is made in Germany by Schott and maybe the gaskets but the metal parts are made in China. I any case the quality is a little lower than on the German or Portugal made lamps. At least in my opinion. Michael
More correct, it was made in Portugal until 1999 and the production started in China in 2000. Michael
Here you are. The Petromax IS made in Magdeburg, Germany. In a party tent . And after that they take a truck with the 3 workers thousands of assembled lamps and put them on stock in a giant warehouse and ship them of to the rest of the World . How can people ever get the thought that they were made in China Take a look and become a believer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfiXXrTsfUg Is this for real? Claus C
Hi Claus, well that's a story, isn't it ? And the warehouse is really big for the manufacturing in the party tent. But they do have an extractor hood for the test facility, amazing... BR, Martin
Yes Martin - in fact I really wanted to believe and hoped just a bit more than this. But this is almost like a hoax and the telli-speaker must either be dum, trying to insult people or there must be sticking money out from his behind. This just killed my dream. I suggest we honor the primeval lamp, the german made Petromax, by cleaning up the Petromax-section under the gallery herre on CPL so it is possible to find ones way around in the unorganized pile of those honourable forefatherlamps that showed the way for the rest of the lamps to come. Did I get too revolutionary here Claus C
