Hi Tomcat You appear to be missing the glass globe (easy to find one) and the top cap which may be a bit harder to locate, but well worth the effort as these all brass first incarnation x246 are lovely lanterns. Steve aka Shedman had a source for these before his sad and untimely passing. Perhaps some other members will know if any are still in circulation. Happy collecting. Regards, Jeremy
Yes 246 and Lilly.............i was lookin a used one might be more original ,ive seen the ebay ones.
Hi Tomcat. Gratulations with this one. From the way it is build it looks as a very very old 246 to me - especially judged by the hood. I have never seen such a Tilley-hood before but it looks origin. The lamp looks to be in fine condition so all in all it makes you a very lucky man. Claus C
I this up in an old auction room in town here...he said there was a Glass or it but couldnt find it the cap had been lost, but i was glad to get it as it was unusual and a 171? i assume fits it........it was very dirty when i bought it it was boggin.....but a few well spent hours turned it around into i nice wee lamp......yu cant "cap" that.!!!
hmm. Maybe its the photo. The lowest groove looks so narrow and the lower rim of the hood also looks very slim. But looking at this fine lamp then I guess it is normal: http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/6492 Claus C
Hi Tomcat This model was first produced in 1946 for a couple of years if I remember correctly. An expert will no doubt correct me. A 171 glass will fit and make it a usable lamp but the dished down bottom section of the glass will not be so deep (just in case you are a purist) as the original. The best new price for a glass is from John Moncrief at £15.00 or you could buy a cheap scrapper from a car boot sale. Any model will do. Regards, Jeremy
Thz X246......and Lilly i must go bck to the auction room in case he has found the original........but i wonder does the 246 [the one made after this] have the same glass dish shape [tho i think the later one with brass cage has a longer handle]?
Here are the Tilley 171 globes. Oldest to the right which was the one supplied with the early X246 lanterns. ::Neil::
Could you give us the relative heights of those three please, Neil - I always seem to have difficulty in distinguishing the middle version. The outer two are obvious and present no difficulty. Also the dates and applications would be nice...
Not sure I can. I took that image some years ago and I have no clue where they might be now. As for dates I never did know. Deep dish is early so 1945 to maybe around 1950 at least and the flat one is the modern type. So mid is about 1950 ish to maybe the mid 1960s. Not very helpful I know but at 4am I am not about to go glass hunting. ::Neil::
Thz Mack.......thats a good illustration of the diff types/shapes of 171 glass...........i went to the auction room today but no luck so far he cant rem where he put it ,im hoping its the proper one for the lamp.grrr. I got another early 246 today but with the long handle?/? havent got it cleaned up yet but it has the glass with it and a cap too
