Hi everyone i am having a problem with my petromax 843 i replace the globes and after about 10 15 min they crack and brake up two of the globes were original which is a shame. Any ideas on what may be the problem.
idea 1: too much heat (jet "worn out") idea 2: no heat resisting glass (pyrex, suprax...) idea 3: globe not hanging loose so it can not expand when heated up idea 4: hole in mantle Erik
There may be a small hole in the mantle and if so, then the heat will be directed through it and that will break the glass, Jeff.
Well Erik pointed to two major things: 1) size globe must be loose fitted. It must be able to expand. 2) heat resistant. With all those ikea fisherman lamps the globes are easy to get but not heat resistant.
Hello, Can you post some pictures of the mounting area and the cracked/broken globes? Perhaps we can spot something in the pictures.
The preheater on my Petromax cracks the glass every time I use it. Only one lantern, but it does it every single time. You may have a tiny jet of flame coming from someplace unseen. Try running it in the dark with the hood off. Maybe you can see it. Good Luck Dan MacPherson
This is strange, your prehater should be aimed at the top 1/3 to the jet. It should not come into contact with the glass. If the nozzle is dirty it can produce a larger yellow flame which may be in contact wit the glass. Pictures please
Hi Dan, I didn't ever see a preheater crack a glass cylinder on one of my Petromaxes. However, cracking can occur if not using the right kind of glass. Some of the chinese lanterns may happen to have regular glass fitted instead of heat resisting glass such as Jenaer, Schott Suprax, RasoTherm etc. BR, Martin
