Hi, I am negotiating the purchase of a stove at the moment and have been offered a pressure lamp. The seller says that this is a "Cat Max", a Chinese copy of a Petromax: I see that it is fitted with a "quick lighter", which should offer loads of fun. Two Questions: 1. Does anyone recognise this model of lamp? 2. Is anyone interested in acquiring it for a few quid? Best Regards, Kerophile.
G,,day . I am also needing a crash course in the quick lighters . for my Butterfly lantern . I also need to find the flipper flapper (technical term ) piece that fits on the torch . cheers, kerry
It's a pressurised flamethrower using the fuel in the main tank - no dual fuel. Effective and a bit dramatic, but works.
Its pretty cool once lit, a little unsettling at first since it can fill the globe with vapor, and if you used coleman fuel or gas that would be scary. I had people take a step back when it started to roar. Does the trick though.
There are two manufacturers of the brand Butterfly, it is the original brand owned by Lea Hin Co. (Pte) Ltd in Singapore (made in Indonesia where their factory is) and it is a "copy" made in China by Cixi Sea Anchor Pressure Lantern Co., Ltd. These lamps are not identical. I assume that you have the real Butterfly made by Lea Hin Co. (Pte) Ltd. E-mail: leahinhq@singnet.com.sg Web site: http://www.butterflyleahin.com They can hopefully give you an information of where to get spare parts. Michael
Hi winchman, you asked about quicklighters: I have only used the device on Petromax/ Hipolito lanterns and on some blowlamps. These are pre-heaters, which are fuelled from the main fuel tank. However the quicklighter burner works on the principle of atomisation to produce a flammable aerosol, rather than on thermal vapourisation of the paraffin. The fuel tank has to be pumped to quite a high pressure (the tanks usually have a pressure gauge fitted) before the valve on the pre-heater is activated, and the exiting jet ignited. Once the main burner is heated sufficiently, the main regulator valve is opened, the main burner ignited, and the pre-heater extinquished by closing its valve. I have studied the pre-heater jets and they are very fine, 4-5 thousands of an inch, I estimate, and need their own dedicated prickers to clean them. Once set up properly, quicklighters work well, but the fuel supply and installed filters have to be very clean to prevent blockage of the tiny jet aperture. Best Regards, Kerophile.
