Hi all, I am considering buying this lamp. I know it is a Primus and I think that it may be a 981 but I am not 100%. It is missing the lens and the top part of the vaporiser. Are parts hard to come by for this lamp and are they easy to work on/ I have a good working knowledge of the Petromax/Geniol system however I am totally new to Primus. Here are a couple of pictures.
This looks more like a 1020 though it would be good to know the size to be 100% sure. As you say it is missing the glass and air intake/mixing tube. You are also missing the handle. On the other side, the spirit cup is still there which is very good as they tend to go missing. These are very simple and reliable lanterns that are easy to work on. The only drawback is that they use specific jets and needles. These are available but I think they are a bit expensive. All in all though they are a good reliable lantern. If the price is right I would buy it.
Hello, It's not an 981, that one has a different burner system, to me it looks like an 1020, and as you say it misses it's air mixing tube, they are easy to fettle and a mixing tube you could probably order from www.fogas.se The should be a model number on the side of the fount. Frederik
Lamp bought for €50 inc postage to...Poland! The seller wouldnt deliver to Ireland but would Poland. I will be over there in the mid Sept so I will collect it then. I think the price is ok
€50 for such a common lantern is a bit on the expensive side in my opinion. Atleast considering that it's missing a couple of crucial parts. But you will get a good lantern, and there's not many lanterns out there that are easier to fettle than the straight forward 1020.
As mentioned in a previous post, I am in Poland and I have had the opportunity to give the lamp a good look over. I must say that I am very impressed with the build quality of the lamp and yes it is a 1020! Primus seem to have spared nothing in the design. It is a good solid heavy lamp. The code on the bottom is AU z so I think it's from the mid 50's. I dismantled the lamp, and sent a request off to fogas enquiring about the parts needed. I am flying back home to Éire tomorrow and plan on putting in the hand luggage, I don't think it would pose a problem, hopefully. So the lamp is now polished and I am looking forward to seeing the lady working.
Well, Im back in Ireland. The day of the flight home I erred on the side of caution and organised a courier to bring the lamp and a few other bits home just in case I wasnt allowed to have it in my carry on. I have bought a second 1020 from a gentleman in Britain for spares so I will have that over the next few days. So here are a few pictures of the lady cleaned. It still has the preheater cup. Strange how they didnt build it into the lamp as opposed to having it clip. What was the advantages of having it like this?? It is missing a few bits but all are included in the lamp for spares. Not the best but not the worst.

I have a number of Petromax, 3 500HK, a 150HK and a 1500. When I compared them to the Primus, the Primus seems to have a heavier gauge of metal used in the tank and it just feels a good sturdy lamp. I am also looking at an immaculate 991. Fingers crossed
Thanks guys. I cant wait to get it up and running. I will update as I go on. Any advice or opinions on a 991? If all goes well on the auction tomorrow I will stick up a few photographs.
Well, I agree that the 1020 is a keeper and that it would last a lifetime. No argument there. It's probably the most easily fettled and solid lantern there is. But silent...!? That is hardly a thing the 1020 and its family is known for. That's a reason I think they are best suited for lanterns while the system with a central vapouriser (e.g. the common 1015) is much more suitable for indoor use.
well, in a noise comparison, the Coleman 200A, Petromax 829, Hipolito 500 and the Northstar are freight trains, the only explanation could be that I have mine modified to use a Petromax 250 hk tip and cleaner?...anyway...it is quiet as a propane, maybe a itty bitty louder than my Coleman 275?....
Petromax 500 is really like a train. The noise is actually a distraction when in conversation near the lamp!!
The auction for the 991 is nearly finished. As I am new to these lamps the monetary value is still vague to me, what is a fair price for one?
As with just about everything, it all depends on condition, demand and where you are. Some things are popular in some parts of the world and not so in others. So you can probably see prices vary between GBP5 and GBP100. For me personally, I wouldn't pay more than half that for a very good one but I do have enough to choose from already.
In Ireland buying from Eastern Europe. It is current at 65 or so euro. Great condition. Primus glass and preheater cup included
It didn't stay at 65€ for long....it went for a crazy price in the end. Pity for me, great for the seller
And then there was light. Bought a spare 1020 for parts, and replaced globe, air mixing tube, needle, jet and away she went. My first litme lighting a lamp with meths. Interesting process
