On behalf of my kid I show you the 829 in action. He bought in mint condition from a butterfly-collector who startede using battery-lamps. I first asked the collector to buy it but I found it too expensive. Then my kid said he wanted to buy it and he halved the price Here she is: Before the bright light appeared it had to be ajusted: So dad - Im ready to collect some butterflys - have you seen any? Excellent photos. As a kid I would have loved to have had a lantern like this as I was a budding entomologist too, now a retired one. Those hawk moths on your son are real beauties.
That I didnt expect. I am not sure these fly around in NZ, so the last person I would think knew these is from the other side of the world Yes this is the Privet-, elephant-, poplar- and eyed hawkmoth. In DK we normally use latin, but I also know the english names, call me nerd Walking in the summerevening with a pressure-lamp, watching them tanking fuel from the flower like hummingbird justifies lampcollecting Claus C
Hi Claus, We have the Sphinx Moth, which like many species of Lepidoptera in NZ, has been accidentally introduced. When people ask me how or why I became interested in lanterns, my usual answer is that I'm a reincarnated moth I should add that under the CCS forum my user name is Odonata, the order of the dragonflies and damselflies, which are my favorite insects. Unfortunately NZ has only 13 species, some of which are self introduced from Australia. Happy lepidoptera hunting. Cheers Clive
The sphinx-moth I had to look up and we only have the cousin, the bedstraw hawkmoth as common. Btw according dragonflies then the past summer we had a for DK rare Aeshna viridis, we hatched 9 of them from our artificial gardenpond. Got some good Photos of them too Our pond is filled with plant Stratiotes and it was possible to Count the mummys from the dragonflys from where they took of, sitting on our housewall and fencing. I bet you have some beautyfull dragonflys and damsels in NZ with all those wet areas. Claus C
