Maybe some of you have seen eBay item 321581942196. I know we don't normally post about live auctions but I think in this case I should. In discussion with Wim in Ede I am now convinced this lantern is in fact a creative forgery attempting to be a unique and rare lantern. It is advertised as an Aida 51 but in fact it is a Petromax 900. The Petromax logos and model number have been removed and you can see the damage where this has been done. Then the Aida name, model number and cp have been added. The markings are not the same. All the Petromax markings are stamped but the added Aida marks appear to be etched. It is a pity but someone has destroyed a nice late 1930s Petromax 900 to do this. Maybe not the seller of course but you have to wonder. ::Neil::
Scratches and minor dig on the oil tank due to its age. Looks like a crude and unconvincing bit of work. Strange and weird thing to do to what would have been a great little lamp.
See also items 221551054617 and 221551067768 which he sold in September. Equally dodgy looking etching. Terry
Maybe start a new collection: real fraud and fake lanterns ? I am not sure what it is with the AIDA brand in Asia. Must be something special.
Another Petromax 100 style lantern with dodgy looking etching - is this the same seller? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151783772663
