I had a bit of a chill going, so I decided to fire up my Butterfly with the heater kit installed to see how it worked.

It heated just fine, but the fumes were terrible. I'm reserving this for the barn or the woods.

Does anyone out there have experience to share with a similar kit? I'm inclined to go back to a mantle and get some light with the heat...

Hello Al, there is plenty of heat when a normal mantle is used, Jeff.

I have a 1500 Petromax which works of the sane principle. It runs as clean as any of the 829B's I have.

Not going to mess with it, but maybe too rich a mix. I lowered the pressure to 1 bar just to keep the over-flame to a minimum. It does do nicely with the radiant heat, and I can see it being an affordable comfort in the barn come mid-winter.

Surely the thing to do if you think it is over fuelling is to replace the jet, lowering the pressure is not the way to do it !!

..or just light a proper heater! That Petromax clone cobble-up is always going to be a compromise IMHO.

I'm sure Al has a couple of Tilley radiators in his arsenal - R1 and R55 IIRC...

Yes David, I do have proper heaters. I just wanted to see how well this kit worked, and I regret that it's a fail for indoor use.

Lowering the pressure was the least-effort solution at the moment. I'm sure that it's jetted properly for a mantle.

I'm new to these, but has the gap above the jet to the tube been checked?

Thanks for the pointer towards the gap. I took a quick look and it was large enough to drive a large truck through! I brought it down to match the jet (350), fiddled with the baffle thingy, and it does seem to be running better now. Still some stink, but nothing compared to before.

Al, you need one of Bialaddin bowlfire heaters that I have. They work well, have a reflector to direct the heat and are just plain cool (or hot???). Used them inside in the past without gripe from my wife, which must mean the fumes are not too bad.

Could probably be convinced to turn loose of one if you were interested. Think you have my e-mail.
