There's at least one other type I can think of - one with a small dome in the centre. I've no idea why there are different types...
Hmm David - I had high hopes tied to you among others. I did see the mini-dome also but only on the Bialaddin and never noticed it on the Vapalux Claus C

The'Cooley' style heat deflector was used on lamps between 1942 and 1946. I did think at first that the blister style was earlier but having seen lots of lamps from the period it just seems random. I have 2 300s from 1945, they both have the darker blue coloured top which was used at that time, one has a blister the other doesn't! As I have said many times before you shouldn't think of W&B sticking to some rigid style, they would just have used whatever stamp was to hand. Cheers..
Thanks James. The two 300X lamps I have is two marooned brass-lamps, no Halifax, and with black enameled top-hats. One of each hat but two different marooned colours, a light and a dark. They are marked the same patent on the hood but no year is marked. I never did understood these differences. I still find them a bit mysticfystics. Claus C

Those are Bialaddin type tanks, Claus, probably/possibly from the late 40s maroon model. Someone may have added Vapalux tops to them. Mind you, I recall there was a sort of hybrid model around the time of the changeover between Vapalux and Bialaddin just after the end of the war. Maybe yours are examples of those. I see at least one has the pressure 'tit' which made a brief reappearance around then. What is impressed on the collars and what date is on the hoods?
I can find no date on the Hood, but this writing: There is no writing at all on the collar below the Cage and there is no year-stamp on the lower rim of the Hood. I guess the tanks came with this Hood/Cage. They come from a militarystore in DK. Here is the collar: Claus C
Hi Claus, As David intimated you have mix and match lamps there. The Vapalux 300x came with the same tank as a Vapalux 300 (broad). It has no date markings because it was made for the civilian market. It was marketed by Aladdin Industries before they went into full partnership with W&B. The Vapalux 300X did have a maroon tank but a lot darker than the maroon on the tanks that you have. They are clearly Bialaddin 300X tanks. There is a lot more detail in my online book. Cheers...
People and their fettling. If I understand this correct, then these lamps comes with: Vapalux: tophat, Hood, vapourizer, controlcock, protectionplate and pumpknob? Bialaddin: tank, tanklid and Cage? Comparing to Davids Bialddin 300X 1946-51. Bought in two different armyshops, same parts shifted and aged the same way. The only difference I see is the maroon-colour where one is lighter maroon than the other. I can see the tank needs a bit more "shoulder" to become a Vapalux tank, but I find it as a strange coincidence anyway No hope in restoring these to original now Claus C
I can't see any lettering on the cage, so they could be the original Vapalux ones. Apart from the very early Bialaddin 300X they are stamped Bialaddin 300x on the collar. So all you really need are two 300 style tanks in brass. I have about 8 here but unfortunately they are all steel....cheers
