Hello, just joined. Looking for advice as to where I can get a wood base for a Tilley ML96. It's copper, damaged but in working condition. At moment it's sitting in a base made by a local potter. Might need it this winter.

Join the queue, Lyn - but behind me please... ;) :D

There are some for Aladdin-type lamps, apparently, into which the Tilley will fit. I can't say I've ever seen them or the genuine Tilley in the wild. Not often in captivity either, come to that...

Two actually, These are the aladdin ones, one as standard which is rather a tight fit for a Tilley and the other has been slightly reworked to hold a Tilley better.

There is always the good old Jacobean as well.

That's an odd bowl on your Jacobean, Matt - and why has it got some sort of bobble on top of the mixing dome? :-k

Edit: I've just figured out the bobble...

More from the aladdin catalogue David, looks good though and the wood work is identical to that of a Tilley. Yes the bobble is the humidity dial on my banjo barometer, never noticed how well placed it was though.

Don't know david, I've got it catalogued in my 1935-36 and 1939-40 army and navy. So it was running along side Tilley. Who came up with the design first I don't know, but it appears that the wood turning may have been outsourced to a third party company that worked for various companies. Unless Tilley produced the stands for aladdin or maybe the other way around.

I was just about to ask the same question - kind of which came first, the chicken or the egg? It's really intriguing though.

The chicken and the egg one is easy Jean, the Tilley and the Aladdin, well that's a different story.

Did Aladdin also have the left-hand twist version?

I wonder if the left-hand twist had something to do with the grain or if it was just a whim on the part of the turner.

Matthew - I've just noticed your age!!! You must have started collecting when you were a bairn. How did you first become interested in lamps?

Thank you all for your replies, hope the queue isn't too long David. At the moment it's sitting in a base made by a local potter.

I believe it was November 2011 when I bought my first Tilley lamp Jean. Only slightly earlier in the year I bought my first railway wick lamp which moved onto other wick lamps, until someone suggested that I try a Tilley. Then I got that running and discovered the wonders of ebay and all the different types of pressure lamps. Then it's exploded over the last 3 years, I've been rather lucky to find what I have in such a short space of time. Right David. ;)

Right Matt - all I want to say is that you seem to have had a lifetime's luck finding rare stuff for next to nothing in just three years...

Hi Digout and Jeff, it does look good and I'm happy with it but the couple whom I'm thinking of giving it too might want to use it if we have another March like we did in 2013 so would like a firmer, more stable and solid base, one unlikely to be knock over by either children or dogs. As you can see it works fine, though still needs a little work on it to bring it up to scratch.
