Hi All My domestic duties are usually confined to DIY , house maintainence , cooking ( well i was a chef for 28 years before i joined the railway ) , taxi work & personal shopping assistant , but the other day i succumbed to the arduous task of buying an iron , ONE POWERED BY PARAFFIN 8) This is what it looked like on the sellers pic's When it arrived with the lovely "My Hermes" Lady it was smashed , the fool who packed it in just one layer of bubble wrap ( even after i asked them plese please pack it well for postage ) obviously didn't care , But in all fairness they re-funded all my money which still left me with a broken iron . ARSE BISCUITS ( See Father Ted 8) ) Still unpreturbed i soldiered on & repaired the broken Bakelite handle with some two part epoxy glue , later i'll drill the handle from the inside of the fount support & push a 5mm steel rod through to secure it properly Here's what it looks like after a bit of TLC ( & Rover Arum white paint ) , & to my supprise the vapouriser works really well the damn thing gets really hot so great for ironing canvas mail bags or ships mainsails but not the wifes delicate nylon undercrackers Pre heating , meths is poured into trough/wick combo inside via side access port. A few pumps & a little pop & she's there Super little burner 8) The mesh you can see is a flame trap/spreader which i had to replace as the old one was in bits 8) Looking better than it did Pity about the postal induced enamel chips though had a lot of fun getting this up & running & i'll do a photo strip down on the next one Stu . Went silly & got another two now on the way
Nice fettling, and when you have them all going you could even use them to heat a small room in winter
That looks real good. I have only ever seen pictures of this type of iron. Who knows... someday i might... Pity bout the damage there. I feel your pain. Received a lantern recently with newly damaged fount
Thanks Guys Phil , you're right naked flames in that confined space could be 'extreme ironing" indeed!!!!! Stu.
The vapouriser in these is the only regulating generator Tilley made. You are supposed to be able to regulate the heat as the control is not just a simple on-off device. However when I was regularly showing stuff at rallies and such I always said they can run hot or B----y hot. Great on linen or denim but not on any man made cloth. ::Neil::
Hi Neil I think your so right on the regulated burner/temperature control of these novel domestic appliainces & damp Harris Tweed would have gone flat willingly under one of these , but flimsy see through lacy , Hang on there a minute this is all about the iron not the flimsy lacy oh lordy here i go again Stu
Hi Stu, An impressive outcome. Better luck also with the next two you mention you have on order. By the way, and for the benefit of Australian fettlers, in the Cheap type shops here the 'Australian Export Paint Enamel' brand spray cans Ivory colour is a near perfect match for the fount, but a good quality undercoat is first required. Their Gold color is also exceedingly similar for the DN250 gold spanner tool which accompanies the iron, and has that bright light gold colour that Tilley used. Iain
