It will be an everyday user so I decided not to replace the vent (yet). It came with a 339 bail so I bent one up from an HT steel rod, using another bail as a pattern. The fount is painted with Rust-Oleum Hammered Deep Green "Hides surface imperfections";-D which should also be a very close match for the Coleman 241G. It is blazingly bright, even compared to my much loved 237s.
Wow Phil, very well done Please tell me if the silver colour is also rustoleum? Is it high heat? Can one put it on a vent? Thanks Ben
The silver paint on the burner base plate is Plascon High Heat Aluminium. It was a b**ch to work with as it sprayed in gobbets and took weeks to dry. It does reflect light quite well, though. Perhaps I should explain that I got this lantern for free from a kind gentleman in whose very damp basement it had hung for quite a number of years. Initially I thought to strip it for parts but the fount and generator were so clean inside and the rust and pitting on the outside was not too deep. So I soaked it for a few days in a citric acid solution and did a pressure test and burn. When it performed so well I decided to rescue it rather than part it out. I had a false start with my first attempt at painting the fount when the paint bubbled when I baked it. After putting the fount aside in disgust for a few months, I got a tolerable result second time around.
Ben, Burner frames don't require a high heat paint as they don't get all that hot. Many of us, self included, use a high heat paint anyway. To the best of my knowledge no one has had any success painting a ventilator. Many have tried but even the high heat paints seem to fail quickly. Do a search on the Coleman Collector's Forum and you'll find several posts on the subject. In the states there are a couple of outfits that will re-do the porcelain at a reasonable price.
Thanks for the info guys. Phil, i know that aluminium paint. Used some on a 351 waterpump once. Worked well on the cast iron, but the remaining paint is still stuck in the can
