Damn! and a scorch mark on the glass too, I see. Was the mantle fresh, or had it been used for a long time? Bumped during transport or storage perhaps?
hello Phil, the mantle was maybe 10 tank fillings old, but there were some holes in the mantle from small particles - shooting through Have a nice lightning RJ
I must say Peerless are the strongest and most durable mantles that I have used up to now. We all know from experience the biggest enemy of mantles is vibration and mechanical shock. The Peerless 111 is big, heavy and quite long, so is probably more susceptible to that type of damage than other smaller mantles. Also, the Petromax type lanterns do seem to transmit more shock & vibration to the mantle when being pumped than e.g. the Colemans. 10 tankfuls is probably a good life expectancy on a 500cp Pmax which is very hot & bright. It is really a pity about the scorch mark on the glass, though. I've got a Chinese made Coleman large bulge globe whith a melted spot in the middle and a horizontal crack running through it caused by a holey mantle.
