I know some of you are familiar with the product coming out of Fukishima.

Is it worth getting a pack of them?

They work out at about £20 for half a gross, so even with a bit of a failure rate they'd be value for "display" lanterns.

    Your views please.

    I bought a pack (2 doz. / 24) of 300 / 400 c.p. a while ago. They certainly work well on my Optimus 1200, Radius 118 and Primus 1081.

The ones which I have do look a bit tatty at the top end where the string is threaded through but they work well for me.

    Thanks.

Yes, I think they would need to be very bad before it wouldn't be worth the investment for non-essential lights.

I'll stump up for a pack.

I use them. The strings are a bit weak, but the mantle is fine. I have some waxed sailmaking thread to use if the string breaks.

As Henry said, they can look a bit tatty at the ends. That's because they are quite large before burning.

I use them on my 'user' lamps and for testing new lamps.

    Cheers

    Tony

Can't beat the price. They work okay for me. As Tony stated they're good on "user" lamps.

Where might these mantles be obtained?

Besides sailmaking thread is there any other string people use around the house? I had a mantle that was too tight and I broke the string so I tried waxed dental floss. It didn't work.

I buy goodies from him frequently, hes a good seller, ships fast and no hassles whatsoever. Of course, since it was coming from Fukushima I once tested the packaging for alpha, beta, gamma etc emissions. Clean as a whistle :)

    What! No Thorium?

Seriously, the city of Fukushima is some distance from the Fukushima plant.

I've bought various things from the same seller including bulk mantles packs, the mantles are good for the price and he is a very reliable Seller.

I just bought myself a couple of different sizes. They were all marked as Butterfly brand and made in China. The only problem I have found (apart from the tatty end as mentioned) is that they shrink a lot. You need to use a size bigger than the rating of the lamp. e.g. the 500cp mantles work perfectly on an Optimus 300 and the 300cp mantles work perfectly on an Optimus 200. I also bought some double tie mantles that I will try on a Primus 1001, but havn't done so yet. It's a pity about the shrinkage as I did need mantles for some 500cp lamps.

That observation is interesting. I have two lots of double tie "300 CP" mantles from Asia (same supplier). One lot has two "red" ends, the other has one red end and one blue end. My casual observation is that the red/blue ones shrink more than the red/red ones...

Bu&&er, the double ties I got are red/blue. Not looking good for working on a Primus.

Yes I agree they're a good seller & have had several batches from them over the years , But i get the Anchor 500cp mantles they sell 8) .

I find on the bigger lamps these work really well however the Butterfly 500cp mantles work better on 300/350/400cp burners as they seem to shrink more  :-k

I also use two tie mantles from a seller in Germany if he's still about & they're very good too but can't remember his ebay seller name , I think Henry has used him too! If i remeber later i'll post it here :-k

    Stu :D

How about LUXOR 400/600cp mantles, made in Austria. Might be they contain Thorium, I've no idea but as they're older production... FOX (latest Belgian member) has a good deal on them, only problem is, they come in boxes of 100pieces. Send him a PT to find out more. He bought an awful lot of spare parts (Petromax) of the Belgian army (air force). To save on postage I can bring any items over to Newark. Must add I have no connection with FOX whatsoever, only offering help.

    Best regards,

    Wim

Would you like me to send you a couple of red/red ones (if I've got any left) to see how they go.

If I'm correct in my observation, the ones that shrink more still work fine on a Tilley...

    Cheers

Stu, his eBay I.D. is: anchorlampen.de

The 500 cp twin-tie (zweilocke) mantles work well on Primus 1001 and 1015.

They may be 500cp but they are NOT suitable for Tilley OL51 which has a much larger burner.
