I acquired this today in a very dirty state. Cleaned up quite well. I am pretty sure it's an Aladdin. When lit the flame is poor and does not reach the mantle so is it missing its flame spreader. Assuming it is can anyone help with what it should look like. If it's not too complex maybe I could make one. Any help appreciated. Thanks
Hi Terry, that's surely an Alladin incandescent mantle lamp (Model 12 and later, most likely a UK made model of a much later production date). It uses a "Loxon" gallery for mantle and chimney fixing, so spare parts are still easy to get. Once you trim the wick accurately and use the correct paraffin/kerosene fuel it will give you a light output of ca. 60CP with absolutely no noise at all. But beware not to adjust the wick too high, otherwise you will get the mantle sooted in no time. The same will occur after a while when the lamp is lit and correctly adjusted in cold condition because the burner gets hot and will then evaporate more fuel than wanted. PS: try to preserve the old mantle, they are much more robust than the new ones. The damage is no problem, contrary to pressure lamps. BR, Martin
It doesn't appear to be missing anything, the flames on these aren't really supposed to reach the mantle. It's the heat generated by the flame that makes the mantle glow. A flame like in the picture below is just about right. As Martin pointed out, you need to trim the wick properly but once you've done that a bit of carful attention and she'll run fine.
Thanks Martin And Mathew. I think that I have sorted it. Nothing missing. The small centre piece full of holes was not seated fully home. Once I'd pushed it down fully the lamp burns well. Nice and bright and as you say, totally silent. I am really surprised how much heat it gives out. Couple of questions. How should I trim the wick although it seems fine for the time being. I don't mind but my wife finds the smell of parrafin unpleasant. Is there a sweeter smelling alternative.

If I had looked properly in the first place it states quite clearly that it is an Aladdin model 12 London on the wick knob. I thought there was lamp oil that didn't smell or was perfumed available.
If an Aladdin is working correctly there should be no smell when it is running. It can smell when lighting and certainly will when extinguished. This is because the burner is still hot but there is no flame to burn the vaporised fuel. Kerosene/paraffin with additives is not recommended as they tend to clog up the wick.
Can someone tell me if this would be okay for my lamp. These are excellent lamps. Sorry I have no experience with the 12 but I am very happy with my 23. When running well it does not smell at all except as said just after extinguished. The flame shot above is slightly more yellow than mine which is a perfect circle of pure blue with no tips. The wick trimmer (a brass one is said to be better than plastic) helps with that but I also turn wick level with top of burner then skim over with a sharp blade -scalpel or similar. Very important always to trim clockwise with the lay of the wick! Best fuel for mine seems to be barbecue lighting fluid. Mine is Supagrill - perfectly clear. Not the cheapest and my local corner shop is wondering about the rate it is selling - I ran them out of stock last week - for the light and heat together I think it's well worth it. It will run OK on paraffin bought from a certain big chain DIY shop but the stuff is sludge by comparison. I'm sure it's OK for greenhouse heaters but it's not Aladdin lamp grade IMHO. Yes, it's like Derek says. And the bayonet isn't seen on the mantle. It's more a function of those four little tabs you have on the gallery. You insert the mantle base in the gallery so each of the two "wings" come between two tabs, and then you twist it in place. the "wings" goes under the tabs: When used on a 23 burner, the mantle is only squeezed in place with a tight fit.
Thanks for the replies. Although I like the pressure lamps this Aladdin was an impulse purchase when I saw it in a junk shop. I love it. I like the fact that it is instant, okay it needs to warm up for a bit but the fact it is quiet is great. Having said this at certain intermediate settings I do get a soft rumbling/roar noise but I think it needs a trim and the side hole in the mantle perhaps isn't helping. Anyway thanks all. I will try some barbecue fluid. It will be cheaper than swapping the wife!
