    Hi
I have a few lamps - Vapalux,Tilley, Petromax etc I use these on our camping trips
I fancy a petrol lamp any suggestions ? I don't need to light the campsite - I have the petromax for that !
Any pros and cons petrol v paraffin ?
Is there less smell ? Longer burn time ?
Any to look for / avoid ?

    Thanks for any thoughts
    Simon

If it's purely function your after, then I would highly recommend colemans more modern offerings. The 295 and 285 are ones that I have and am very pleased with, in fact I have 3 295's now. The 282 (I think) is a single mantle version of the 285 which again is a very good lamp and kicks out a lot of light and heat.

I was using both a 295 and a 285 last week in the caravan and there was absolutely no odour what so ever, other than the flys stuck to the hood. :-&

I don't use petrol in my lamps though, I only use panel wipe, so if you were to use petrol as you mention then I'm not sure how your experience would differ from mine.

Well if you want a Petrol lamp it has to be a Coleman :D

Main advantage is ease of use - modern ones light instantly and don't need preheating. I find they are less smelly.

Disadvantage is the cost of fuel. You cannot use petrol from a garage as it will clog up the vapourizer. Coleman fuel and its substitutes are expensive compared to paraffin.

So looks like a Coleman then ! Probably a single mantle one as I think this will be bright enough
If I use petrol and this blocks the vaporiser is it easy or possible to clean ? Will it block quickly ? Panel wipe is it safe fumes wise ?
Any good places to buy the panel wipe ?
    Thanks again for the thoughts

Rather than panel wipe I get Aspen 4 from the Ernest Doe garden store at Benington. It is a clean form of petrol designed for lawnmowers and the like.

Is it sold in cans or do you take along a container along might be good to use in my Coleman stove

    Cheers

Considerably safer than petrol from the pump that has all sorts of nasty additives and impurities in it...

Personally I too use Aspen 4 in all my "petrol" lamps.

If you do not need a lot of light then maybe LED lanterns would be worth considering? Coleman has many models, but in general there a lots of them to choose from. They do not smell and I am sure that they have many other advantages :)
