Just been playing with some of my recent purchases. Successflully lit a R46 double burner radiator - loadsaheat, but a bit of extra heat from a blowtorch made things easier. Next up was the OH574 which started up like goodun - a really nice throw of light, even up at the ceiling when directed there! But less success lighting the OL50. Initially there was just flame, no vapourisation to speak of, so I had a look at the burner and vapouriser - all corroded together, but cleaned up well. I tried the vapouriser in the OH574 and it flamed awfully, so that's junk. I used the good vapouriser in the OL50, and all was well - it lit nicely. However after 5mins or so the light faded and was replaced by a roaring sound from inside the burner, but very little flame or light. ??? is going on??? I've not come across this problem before and would love some guidance. Thanks Jonty
Roaring sound means the flame is burning inside the burner rather than at the mantle. Tricky to diagnose, could be a bad vapouriser, bad burner or insufficient pressure (possibly caused by a leak somewhere). The outlet holes in the burner may be enlarged allowing the flame to flashback into the burner casing.
Thanks for such fast replies! It's a brand new vapouriser, so I suspect the burner. I think the pressure is ok - masses of high pressure air escaped on turning it off by depressurising. I'll try a different burner and keep you posted! Only just joined, but a lifelong primus/Tilley fan. I'll try to photograph the budding collection forperusal! Cheers Jonty
I think the burner is a 210 - can't find one listed anywhere as a spare. Does anyone know if a X246 burner can be made to fit - I realise that there must be different burners for 300cp and 500cp but need a bit of help here! Thanks guys (and gals?) Jonty
Yes, an X246 burner will fit. The only difference is the 210 burner has "silencer buttons" on the ends of the air tubes, whereas the 218 burner as on a Guardsman has "gallery bushes" which are interchangeable. Henry.
Thanks for your replies. Just for closure I thought I'd post an update - success, I'm pleased to say! I thought that before changing the burner, i'd just check the burner casing was clean. Therein lay the problem - a LOT of corrosion on the burner tube. Amazingly I managed to dismantle and clean the burner without wrecking the mantle, and after cleaning it all up all worked fine, and the burning roaring back into the burner has ceased. Let there be light! As I was on a roll I used my new polishing machine to clean p my second TL106 - so now I have a lovely matching pair complete with white glass shades courtesy of eBay. Posh! I stand corrected. I'm away for a week but photos will follow!! Off to an isolated cottage with no electricity - paradise! OL50 isn't quite finished yet, so shall I take my new Guardsman, my Hospital lamp, a pair or TL10's, an AL620, the AL21, the OH574, a pair of FL6's, or all of them? It's too warm for the R1 or R46.... I'll get out the camera and get snapping. Been having loadsa fun fetting a young and budding collection. Jonty
