Hi chaps,just joined after reading a few posts over the weeks. I have four lanterns at the moment and I am hoping to acquire a few more in the near future. These consist of an Optimus 550,Optimus 1550G, Optimus 1200G,and a Coleman Northstar. Cheers.......Trevor

Hi Claus, Yes the Optimus lanterns run great and are nice and bright,especially the 500cp ones. The 1200 is also good but has a frosted glass which cuts down the output. The Northstar is also a great lantern( if you manage to get a good one as they do vary)it runs on unleaded gasoline and also burns with a good strong light. Welcome Trevor I've got an Optimus 1350G myself, and they are excellent lanterns Beside that a couple of Petromax'es, a Vapalux M320, Austramax M3-300 and a Coleman 639C.... They tend to multiply quickly
Hi Revorge, I am hoping to add another 1200 g to my collection,providing I can get it at the right price. I must admit I prefer the smaller Optimus lanterns as they give out a nice amount of light without being in your face as are the1550's. Trevor
I agree to some extent. Especially since the 200 CP Optimuses give more light than many other brands 300 CP, or higher, rated lamps does. Seriously though... it all really comes down to what you intend to use your stuff for. The purpose for a lantern is of course mainly to give a good working light outdoors or e.g. in a workshop, a barn, a henhouse or even a frontal area of a boat etc. But they are generally meant to be used outdoors. In those cases I can't see an as high CP as possible as a bad thing. That's why I can't get why people use them in their houses nowadays. That's not where they should be. That's where the other lamps should be. There are cases when a lantern isn't supposed to be too bright, though. It could be for camping or even a military tent (that's where you could see many of todays Optimus 200/1200 when they were used as intended) But today we mainly collect these things. If we intend to use them, it's often inside our houses, and of course most lanterns are totally off then. So to summarize... If you find a lantern to be in your face, as you said, you probably are using it in the wrong place. If you are inside your house you should use a table lamp with the correct kind of shades. Frosted, opal or even coloured. Parchment shades are perfect for reading lamps when placed a bit high on a side table. If a lantern is used as it should be, but still a bit annoying, there are means to shade them. Large metal shades on top or side reflectors that cut of the sector directed towards you.

That's the 1200, Jean. That one and it's sibling Optimus 200 are very popular. Some people really like brass.
