This should probably not be in the Geman gallery because I have no doubts it was actually made in India with intent to deceive. The plastic fittings are typicaly heavy Indian types. The stampings on the tank are crude copies of the real thing probably done with a small chisel. The plastic cover to the bail is a uniquely Indian thing. The real giveaway however is the power rate. It states the lamp is 450 cp. Petromax never made a 450 cp lamp. At least they did but they are all marked as 500 HK. It so happens that 500 Hefner Kandels does work out to about 451 cp but you will never see that on a real Petromax. So a crude forged Petromax and one to watch for because I am in no doubt the quality will not be near as good as a German made Petromax. I don't own this lamp any more although I did because it is one of the lamps I got as part of the Late John Findlay's legacy. I have since traded it to Wim Van Der Welden in Holland as his interest in all things Petromax is pehaps greater than mine.
I've just seen a lamp the seller states is made in India, is NOS and is badged as Fargo. It looks much the same as this lamp.
I don't mind Indian rip-offs that much, better than the Chinese ones IMHO. A sort of honest roughness.
You blokes are scaring me. I just bought a Petromax 826 from India (hasn't arrived yet). I wish I'd seen this thread BEFORE I paid for it. From the 5 or so photos it looked, to my very untrained eye, legit.
