A friend of mine imports a famous brand of wristwatches. These arrive packed in plywood boxes measuring 47cms X 30cms X 30cms. I cut these up and make carrying cases which are vertical. The lid imprisons the top and the base has a circular cutout which imprisons the tank. The lid has a false ceiling which has the circular cutout to imprison the top, with a small trapdoor cut in one corner in which fits the ignite and a lighter and in the space above where the top fits there is space for 6 spare mantles. The lid fastens onto the box with four small flat brass hooks and eyes. The lid has a carrying handle made of braided cord of approximately 14 mm in diameter. This handle enters the lid through two holes and is knotted below. Thus lamps can be carried safely so as not to crack the glass together with all accessories except for the jar and meths. It works very well. That is how I transport them and store them on board my boat. Even in rough seas the mantles are not affected as the lamp inside is rigidly secure.
