Our new forum facility has the 'like' function. I'm planning on disabling it. Most definitely. But it was announced here so opinion is to be expected.
First, I'm not a user of Facebook. I do have an opinion, maybe for the owners and moderators of this forum to think about; If someone uses the name of this forum for a Facebook page that is not moderated or administered by the people who take care of this forum, how will the general (or specific) goals and destiny of this forum be represented? If the Facebook page uses the name of this forum, its content will be linked to the CPL by association, whether or not the owners/admin of this forum approve of that content. That content may not all be flattering or even decent, but it will be seen as coming from this forum and its membership. Dean
As mentioned previously, my wife has a Facebook page. Linking to a Facebook page in another post, I found I was automatically logged on as my wife. I then began to scroll down the very many posts, and found one of our family - including myself. Now that is why I consider Facebook and intrusion in privacy. I do not want to see other peoples family, and I have no desire for the World to see mine. There will be words. Nothing to hide? Then wouldn't you be walking around naked everywhere?
It doesn't use the name of this forum. It doesn't so it won't. Looking ahead, I suppose if someone did set up something else using the CPL 'brand' and purporting to be linked to it, Ross would have various avenues of redress to resort to... I don't know for sure, Derek, as the precise ins and outs of FB elude me but it sounds like the missus needs to adjust her privacy settings...
I have always found Facebook to be a poorly designed, confusing piece of crap. However, I am a member, purely to keep in contact with distant relatives. At one time I did have some 'friends' on FB, but got thoroughly irritated with inane posts about what music they were listening to on the bus. So now it is just close relatives and the most basic of profiles. Terry
Sound like me Terry! I even have a message in place of my cover image saying the account is for group use only.
I enjoy using FB albeit in a reserved manner and I am already part of a few WW2 groups. The reason I enjoy it is that it displays info that I want to see so why not Pressure Lamps? As mentiond before, it is not associated with this site and its your choice if you would like to follow it or not. All I envisage it to be is that it will show snippets of PL topics while browsing FB. CPL cannot be outdone and the status quo will continue.
Do you? - I must have another look! Incidentally, FB has started to suggest again in the past couple of days that I might know you...
Select & upload multiple images at once, copy & paste images into post, drag & drop, insert all as thumb or full in one operation, auto optimisation on the fly allows for large file size uploads. CCSv4 showing at full screen & mobile. Has interim sizes inbetween for tablets, eg gallery view - wide is 6 columns, tablet is 3 & phone 1. {edit - sorry I lost the images. I'd forgot I'd hotlinked them from CCS which has just been archived}
Looks interesting and I like the idea of a more simple and automated process for uploading. Will there be a similar simplification of the download process, for instance by letting a whole catalogue download in one go? And will it be possible to let at least text-intensive material upload in a better quality, to allow for it to be more easily readable?
I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this. All these extra bells and whistles will probably not run on this pc and shut me out of the site. ::Neil::
Neil, it's not an application you run on your PC - it's just the internet & it should be easier for you & your PC rather than harder. If we don't move to a modern package the code the forum is written in will eventually start to malfunction as the software that drives the internet changes. The support for this package has ended so the code is aging. Modern software uses up to date versions of the same code & server software PHP, MySQL, InnoDB, html5, Apache etc. Unlike old Tilly's this package can't be kept going. The worry would be if we didn't move. Forget optimising images & just uploading one at a time. All that will change & make using the site easier. An up to date browser will help but that applies to using the 'net in general. The phone friendly format is a bonus & almost web-standard feature now. It's not an extra that brings any resource overhead with it. Be assured this is not change for changes sake. Given the input so many folk have put into CPL & CCS I couldn't leave the communities high & dry by just doing nothing until we broke. This is the culmination of a 3 year project & 12 months of testing & dry runs. Our new package is a market leader & powers the largest proportion of forums on the web.
I have tried the uploading function on the new site, and can confirm that it's a great improvement compared to the more fiddly kind we use today. It's more versatile and intuitive. It's still possible to make mistakes, like where to put the image in the post etc., but that's really not an uploading problem. The actual uploading is very good. Especially the automatic adaption to a certain size since the demand for a small file size here has been the main issue. I haven't checked if it auto-rotates those iPad/iPhone pictures that often turn out sideways, though. That would have been a good function.
I think an option to make ipads & iphones to burst into flames is a good idea! I keep forgetting it's the internet & everyone else's fault Apple product have these issues.
One mans' meat etc. Simple is good. But simple doesn't satisfy all. http://www.iandent.com/beyondbroadband/_Masters/Beyond_Broadband.pdf Might be of interest to some.
That's Academics for you. An industry I'm involved with but don't recognise in his paper. Entitled to his opinion though. https://blindcyclistsunion.wordpress.com/2010/10/01/human-beings-not-classified-by-the-eu-as-biological-economic-devices/
Thanks for the link Ross - interesting read. I'd only come across Dent's offering just recently, and not through Ian PJ.
It does! I just tested with the slanted picture we got here today. Saved it as it was, still laying on its side on my hard drive so to speak, and uploaded it as it was on the new CCS, et voilà - it turned out standing up. No more fuel spill. I hope we'll soon change to the new platform here at CPL too.
It seems to be running pretty smoothly over there Christer. We're already discussing plans to move CPL & the process should be smoother due to the practive runs & final move of CCS. Closure may still be a week though. Hopefully better than CCS where it was nearly four! CPL would remain read-only during the process. We'll give CCS a bit longer to settle in & if all goes well we could be looking at October to move CPL.
Everyone uses Facebook differently and in my opinion it's a bit silly to generalise about 1.19 billion monthly active users.... I use it mostly for "chat" with people I know who are spread far and wide. I hate chatting on the phone and always have, much preferring the written word. It is after all how we once used to communicate with each other over distance. The difference now is that it is instant. I'm in a few groups but quite selective about those I join as it's quite easy to end up having to sift through tons of unwanted statuses. One of the most interesting groups I'm in is a local "history" group for the area I mostly grew up in. I've even bumped into "the girl next door" through it I'm in a couple of groups relating to my local area now and some vintage show groups, all of which are useful for keeping abreast of these and other local events. Really it is whatever you make of it and anything you aren't interested in or don't want on your page you can hide or ultimately block...
