I have been offered some 500cp mantles for my tilley storm lamp. will these be ok to use. I have been using the normal 164H 300cp mantles.

    G'day LJ and welcome.
I have not used them but info from Basecamp Link

500cp mantle for original X246/500 Stormlight. Not standard mantle, will not work on 300cp X246 Stormlight

Is there any reason for this?

    Hi LJ

I guess the 500 cp mantles have a greater volume/size when burnt in which will affect how the vaporised paraffin burns. The pre-tied holes designed to fit the burner and mantle support spiggot are probably too big to suit the standard 300 cp burner. Just a theory as I have never used a 500 cp version.

    Regards, Jeremy

Yes they will work but because they will be too big they may not fully inflate and you might not get a good light. However it will be a waste of perfectly good 500cp mantles which should be reserved for lamps that demand a bigger mantle. ::Neil::

If you have been offered the old style mantles which were for the Tilley IL-34 etc., then they are worth getting, but if the mantles are for the later 500 series lantern then they are not so desirable,

Thanks guys. Think I'll stick to the proper mantles then.
