I was at a local auto jumble the other day and picked up this incomplete Evening Star. The seller said he was fed up trying to sell it and as I was the first to show any interest, I could have it for free, otherwise it was going to the dump. As you can see in the photos, the tank is good with no dents, but there is some surface rust on the underside. The filler cap is present and is designed to take an external pump. The control wheel is present, but does not turn - I only tried a gentle turn though. The frame is sound, but the mica globe has seen better days. I don't have any other Evening Star lamps or parts so it's not much use to me, but it would be a tragedy for such a early example to go for scrap. Hopefully, another member may be able to make use of it for parts. PT me if you can give it a home. All I am asking is that the postage is covered - I would guess around a fiver via Hermes. Terry
These are an easy fix. It will accept an Akron burner which will just slot in place and then it wants an older type Akron or Coleman hood. Not always readily available parts perhaps but if you ask around the US collectors I am sure parts can be found and when you find them they just bolt on. ::Neil::
I'm not sure what it would cost to get it to the USA but I have enough akron parts to make that one complete again. I would gladly give it a new home depending on shipping cost.
CrazyCamperGreg was the first to PT me, but after checking shipping prices we came to the conclusion that it was not worth it. So the lamp is now on it's way to Rangie in Caithness. Terry
Lamp arrived! Great thanks, Terry! Now to find a suitable hood, going to be tricky to find one with a mesh portion, think i'm going to have to get creative! Alec.
Mine had been dropped on its head and had a terminally-ill gauze section. It's been very difficult to find a suitable replacement. Fingers crossed. It's probably easier to go with an Akron hood as Neil suggests...
The camera still takes pictures but I think the card is stuck in there for ever. Anyway, I found a lead I can use to download pictures. So:- An image of the old gauze as sent to me by email this morning. Well beyond repair. Look what the postie brought about an hour ago! Absolutely perfect! Thank you, Ray! - I love you and want to have your babies! Reunited at last! Now to get me finger out and get it running...
David, This advice is with respect to your camera memory card (not Ray): Sometimes you need to push it in a bit before it comes out. Cheers Tony
Actually, no, Derek. The full quote was this:- The emoticon at the end makes all the difference... 8) Thanks, Tony and yes, that's the standard way to remove the card on a Canon PowerShot A2500 - push it in a bit and it pops out loose. Not now however...
Oddly enough, it's on the breakfast bar right next to my Evening Star. Maybe we'll soon be hearing the patter of tiny feet, eh...
Initial strip down and clean up complete Control valve seized so soaked in diesel for a couple of days, this and a light heating at the gland nut saw it come free. Spindle cleaned and re-packed, taper in good condition, oiled and re-fitted. Successful pressure and dunk-test. Curious that it has a steel base (and a bugger to clean out the rusty dust!!), unless they were unsure about the long-term strength of a flat sheet of brass. Generator in excellent condition. Does anyone know what pricker size it should be? 0.27mm? Just for reference. I'll clean the cage and await the postie next! Alec.
An interesting feature I had overlooked is the window in the Mica Globe for the lighting-taper! I notice it also on This Lamp in SRG I wonder if Fred is up to the challenge.... Alec.
Finally got some panel wipe late on Friday afternoon but just too busy with other things to sort out the lantern. But you've shamed me into it now...
