Because i used Windows 8 for about 6 months i got used with it and it did not seem so complicated any more, but Windows 8.1 is better and it seems more stable. I also still use my XP., computer, because most of my software is designed for XP., and it will not work with any of the later operating systems. Microsoft's next operating system will be released sometime next year and it will be called Windows 10, they are skipping the number 9 for some reason, Jeff.
Planned obsolescence I'm afraid Jeff, like most modern cars. One reason why you see so many one headlight cars about - needs a factory trained mechanic and possibly special tools to change a bulb. But if computers were more like these we'd likely have to pre-heat them with something before cooking: The 'Terrible Twins'.
I recently upgraded my Windows operating system to Windows 10, it's a free upgrade and it is better than Windows 8.1.
This link shows when Microsoft will stop supporting Windows Vista and Windows 7 etc.. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/lifecycle#section_1
So far windows 10 is a good operating system and i enjoy using it on my main computer. However, my old XP computer is to primitive to handle the more modern Microsoft operating systems, so I have installed Linux Mint 17.2 on it and it's a fine OS.,! I'm using it to type this post and it will take me a while to find my way around it, but it's now fully updated and i have enabled the fire wall.
I've used Linux for a couple of years now. It is a fantastic, free, operating system. There is no need to pay for expensive and intrusive anti-virus protection. I use Google Chrome as the browser and never had a problem with it. I think Firefox is the default browser. For anyone considering using Linux, I highly recommend it.
Updated to Windows 10 on my laptop a while back and much prefer it to Windows 8 or 8.1. The main complaint I have is that there are no ad blockers available for the default browser (Edge) yet.
Jeff, Being on an island I don't have ADSL broadband and my wireless broadband has a smallish monthly allowance of data. For that reason I rarely play videos or visit youtube etc. So many sites these days have incessant ads, including videos that start without your permission. They drain my data something shocking. I have just downloaded AdBlock from Linux and am using the FireFox browser. So far so good, it seems to work very nicely. You can, for whatever reason you have, exclude sites from being blocked. I think it's worth it even if you have un-limitted data as the ads are so annoying - to me at least. I thought you might be interested to know about AdBlock.
Recently Microsoft deactivated my product key, the reason that they gave was that I was using Windows 10 pro., and that my product key was for Windows 10 home and that is a lie, my original product key which I still have is for Windows 8 pro and when Windows 8.1 was released Microsoft offered a free upgrade for Windows 8 users which I accepted and when Windows 10 was released they offered a free upgrade to it, which I also accepted, so my product key was legal and I was certainly not going purchase another one. So I was rather irritated by their decision! Until that happened I had not had many problems with Windows 10, one update year or two ago did stop the MS., browser from working, but the next update corrected it and I mostly used the Opera browser anyway. Over the years I have tried several Linux OS., and the two which I now use are Linux Mint and Zorin, so I decided to install Zorin 12.4 on my main PC., and I instructed the installation to erase Windows 10. I still have Windows 10 Home on two older PCs., but for how long, as I also used the free upgrades for those, but thankfully Linux is available! Zorin OS: Your Computer. Better. Main Page - Linux Mint
Windows 8.... why did anyone think it was a good idea? 8.1 was a little better and 10 is even better still, but with any of the above I use classic shell. It just works and if (for some unknown reason) you need the Microsoft approved Start Menu you can get to it with one click! I still use Windows 7 on a couple of the machines at home and they are so easy and obvious I will not be changing them any time soon.
I have e-mailed Microsoft about their erroneous action in deactivating my product key, but I have not yet received a reply.
I have fixed the problem with Windows 10 which I mentioned in one of my previous posts. I searched online and found that I would be able to reinstall Windows 10 and activate it with my original product key and so far the activation is stable.
