Morning all... back from Ashover and happy to report only one lamp failure over the three days :)

Sadly it was my Optimus 930 :(

The cleaning needle had broken off in the jet. I've managed to get the tip out hopefully without damaging the jet, but I'm now left with no cleaning needle...

Is there anywhere in the UK that sells these? If not somewhere that will ship to the UK or an alternative part that will fit...

The jet is marked 200 if that makes a difference to the needle size...

Basecamp item 2680, but out of stock. On 14th September Mike told me via email "due week commencing the 28th September, watch the WebPages for the flag to be removed". Not removed as at today.

Is the needle a direct replacement or do I have to change the jet at the same time?

Do you have a link? I've only found complete spares kits on there.

And as always Fogas got needles and jets for the common Swedish lamps and lanterns.
The 930 is of course listed.
Just give them an E-mail if you don't understand the web page.

I emailed Fogas last month. They wanted £19.00 postage to the UK for a needle, jet and ceramic nozzle, which is why I'm waiting for Basecamp to get them in.

I'm sure the Px 250 needles can be used on an Optimus 200 jet. Otherwise a Px 250 jet isn't that expensive and could be good to have as a spare.

I'm not wishing to rubbish Fogas. I'm not trying to as it's the delivery companies that set rates.

I was quoted about £40 postage for a ceramic nozzle.

I simply couldn't bring myself to pay 4X's postage to what the part cost.

How in the world it could possibly cost that sort of freight for such a small item still makes me wonder.

I do however feel, that companies that are willing to post worldwide do need to aggressively investigate the best courier/postage options if they wish to have maximum turnover.

    Matty.
These companies think that they have you because they have the part you want badly so they set the postage .
You don't like the postage no part then .
But just shop around then .

Bob perhaps you are right, I wouldn't have thought it should cost that much to post a small thing like the nozzle.

Yesterday, I had a parcel arrive from the UK that was 130X160X60 and weighed 7kgs at a cost of £50.

I'm not trying to defend Fogas, but you have to understand their situation. Their main business is gas appliances for the local market. Anything kerosene related is a very small part of their turnover. Generally I have found German suppliers to be much more reasonable with their shipping costs. In general it is expensive in most of Europe.

Some places apparently have contracts with couriers that can make it quite difficult to ship small orders economically - their courier might have a minimum cost. Not saying they do in this case, it is something that has happened to us in the past when we've tried to buy stuff though.

I ordered some Primus and Radius jets and needles from Fogas and had them shipped to Germany where friends were on holiday at the time. It was sent by ordinary untracked letter post in a small padded envelope and the cost was SEK50.00 which I thought was very reasonable.
I received excellent fast service and communication from Conny there. (a different Conny)

Out of interest, would it run with a 500cp jet? Has anyone actually tried this?

I have never tried a 500cp jet but would expect the mixture to be way too rich. The burner dimensions are the same as on the Optimus 200 lanterns.

I didn't try a 500cp jet in the end but I did get a couple of 150cp Petromax Jets and needles that came as a "kit" with a little cleaning needle insersion tool...

Well the results were quite interesting:

The body of the 150cp cleaning needle didn't fit up inside the bottom opening of my original 200cp jet. So the only option was to replace the jet too with the one that came in the kit.

Everything fitted perfectly and the needle functions as it should.

The sound the lamp makes has changed, both my wife and I noticed this. It's slightly louder and deeper.

The light is more yellow; before the change this was probably my whitest lamp in terms of light output as well as one of the brightest. It is still a very intense light but just not as white.

Finally it seems to require less pressure to run at full brightness, in the past this lamp took a lot of pumping for its size now it seems to require a little less.

Anyway I left it running for about an hour without any issues, so very pleased to have this lamp back up and running as it is a real favourite of mine.

I Think Swedish mail is to blame for the high cost.

Swedish Mail parcel is 325 SEK up to 1 kg.
    Insurance another 104 SEK.
As far as I know Swedish mail is the only way to send abroad.

It can be sent cheaper as registered mail, up to 0,5 kg is 84 SEK + 151,50 SEK for registered.

I guess they are afraid to send without any proof of delivery.

Yes, but mail in a large envelope is only 140 SEK for 1 kg, and much of these things are possible to send in a padded envelope.

There are plenty of other options than the regular mail if you wish to send abroad.
DHL or Schenker just to mention the most common.
