Hello everyone. I do not know if they are in the right section. Back from vacation, I found a lamp coleman 295 at unleaded gasoline. I ask if you can use the traditional mantles that use for Petromax lamps. Or they are obliged to use the coleman
You could try one and if it's a single tie mantle, then it should be okay, but it will be more bulbous than a Coleman mantle when it's burned off.
If the Petromax are for 500CP then I think they will form much too big. I don't know the Coleman 295 very well - I have a 285 which has 2x mantles. My packet of spares (Coleman 21A102) says use for 285 and 295. Petro 500 cp mantles on a 285 would be baggy and hardly illuminate at all in my view. They are at least 25% bigger. If you have plenty of them there is no harm trying, but I think it might end up in disappointment. If you don't have so many it's a shame to waste them. Good luck whatever you decide. Jon
The recommended ones are #21 from Coleman so the Petromax ones would have to be 100-150CP. I use Peerless 2C2HG ones and they are great.
Meanwhile, I take this opportunity to thank for the answers received. Unfortunately (here in Italy) mantles #21 Coleman are unavailable and I would be forced to buy them at prices too high abroad. Since I have a good amount of mantles 200cp for Petromax lamps, but I have no the certainty that they are appropriate for lamps coleman 295. I was wrong to put the figure of a mantle 500CP I mean it's just a matter of form of mantle ??? I wonder if more convenient to throw the coleman lamp
Onafest I use all kinds of different mantles on Coleman lamps. As a matter of fact, I prefer other mantles than the ones Coleman recommends. See here: http://0flo.com/index.php?posts/54965 So, try a one that looks ok and see... Cheers Tony
200 cp mantles will work fine on a twin mantle Coleman lantern. In fact the Coleman 21 mantle is a 300 cp so actually slightly over size for a twin mantle 300cp lantern. 500 cp mantles will be too big. So just about any make of 150 to 300 cp singlke tie mantle will work OK. Manufacturers always recomend their own product but we know very well that sometimes alternatives can work better and last longer. So you use what you can find at a reasonable price. ::Neil::
I don't think you mentioned a CP rating Onafest. I just knew 500CP would be oversize. The new type from petromax with tighter weave were certainly great on a 500CP lamp. If the new type are available for 2-300CP then I would try on my 285. Interesting comment about the 2x mantles might not illuminate as well as the single on a 295. Food for thought...
When you mentioned using Petromax mantles on a Coleman lantern, i assumed that they were the smaller Petromax mantles, hence my first reply.
I do not use Coleman mantles at all any more for my Coleman lamps and lanterns. I strongly recommend Peerless mantles, as they beat Coleman mantles (except the old silk lites, NOS) in quality by a country mile. They are also cheaper than the Coleman mantles. Not sure where you can order them in the UK, but they are available from Old Coleman Parts in the US, and from Peerless Mantles in Canada. They work great. You would need the 2C-HG size, which is the replacement for the 250 cp Coleman #21. For the smaller 300 cp single mantle Colemans, you need a 24-A, same as the Coleman 99, and for the larger 500 cp single mantles, a 1111, same as Coleman 111.
