I just finished fettling this for a friend. I am working on another (earlier) variation. When I finish it, I will post a set of pics comparing the versions. The remnants of the Aladdin decal: In its natural habitat: Using a "Fukishima" 300cp single tie mantle: The next photo does not do justice to the output. It was taken at dusk with a fair bit of ambient light (note the use of the broken globe for testing these lamps: Cheers Tony
Nice lamp Tony, I look forward to the comparison-photos. The enamel looks almost without damage as the chrome and that's a long step forward towards the final look. Good find. Claus C
Hi Tony, I've acquired my first Aladdin with the chrome tank and it looks quite similar to this lamp. A noticeable difference is this lamp looks to have the enamelled hood where mine is chrome. The lamp I have has an all brass cage, which is a first for me. Another first is, instead of being entirely one piece, the cage is two pieces that separate. The center of the cage, where the nut screws to the bolt to hold the cage in place, is removable. On the other Aladdins'I have the cage base is manufactured as one piece. Does this lamp have a one or two piece cage?
When Aladdin went over to the nickel plated version from the painted tank version, it included the change to the two piece base plate. This was standard from then on. This allows you to take the cage off without removing the vaporiser, which you couldn't do on the older ones.
Thank you Nils. I've only just noticed that the collar has a flat base on it as well - a couple of mil edge - turned inwards, that sits on the fount. The previous painted Aladdins' have the collar that looks the same top and bottom, no edge. Two other things I have noticed is the earlier Aladdins' have a recess in the hood that the nut that holds it on sits in. There is no recess on this hood. The painted Aladdins' metho cups center hole are rounded and just slip over the vapourisers securing nut. This metho cup is machined so the cup has a hexagon shape that fits perfectly to the vapourisers securing nut - of six sides.
Well you've just named some of the other differences there were. It might be small changes, but they were all significant. Another obvious difference is the plastic control wheel compared to the fibre wheel. The top hat on the Aladdins should not have a dent (or hollow) in them, no matter which variation. It is not uncommon that they end up that way as there is no solid support under the top hat to stop the nut being screwed down too far. On the painted versin, the metho cup is held in place by two tabs on the base plate. With the two piece desine on the new base plate, they had to find a different way to keep the metho cup in place and came up with the hexagon shape to fit over the vaporiser nut.
Nils, I really enjoy these Aladdin lamps and marvel at the differences in them. I'm trying to piece together as many changes/variations as I can. With this information I had to run out to the garage in the pouring rain and have a look at the indented two hoods. Bingo, you are spot on. It looks like it's been manufactured but on a close inspection you can tell the indentations aren't perfect and that is because of what you already knew - people simply screwing the hoods down too tight and creating an improper indentation. Thanks muchly. I bought a stove. The reason I picked it up was the fount reminded me of a lamp fount with a stove burner added. It just seemed unusual but is in terrific condition. I posted it on the stove site for identification and it turns out it may very well be an Aladdin Stove/heater/ lamp. A link to the 3 forms of the lamp/stove/heater makes it look very much like an Aladdin. No markings help to place it as an Aladdin. The fount is much different to these Aladdin 1A founts. Once the 'stove' arrives I will try and Aladdin lamp head and see how it goes.
Just started to look at a 1A that has sat on the shelf for ages. I have two others similar but chromed font, working. Now the one on the bench is the green painted brass one, the paint just falls off so will clean it off then have to make up my mind weather to paint in crinkle finish or just polish the brass. Before getting to work on this I need to dismantle the generator , needle etc. Not wonting to reinvent things . Is there any tricks to pulling it apart, and how to reassemble it ? I have searched all over and can't find any information or diagrams of it . It would be good to know the best way. Cheers Rob
Pulled it apart after talking to Sands in Melbourne. Ordered new pricker, jet and seals. Arived in two days . It cleaned up easley, the paint although planing to keep it, it just fell off, so it's a brass one for now, in the future I may paint it. Put a new NRV in and no matter what I did it leaked, so put a new pip in the old one and bingo , no leaks. As said by Ross some new NRVs are no good, this one off the net was poo. So it's time to fire it up. Meths to prime , tank half full and it works very well Stoked, lights up the workshop, so good ! Cheers Rob
Good to hear of your success Rob. How about a photo or even better a new topic here in the gallery with lots of photos. You'll probably find that if you put a new pip in the new NRV it will most likely work. These 'new' items are probably old stock and have been lying on a shelf for decades.
Thanks Tony, now all good, I was a bit impatient so I ordered from Melbourne, more expencive than oversease but not much but it was quick plus I got to talk to someone with good advice, So I may use them again, especially as I occasionally go to Melbourne and it seems a good excuse to visit the shop. Nils, yes it's time to try some photoes, this weekend I will take some and try to upload them, before I will read up on it and have a go. Cheers Rob
