Or rather how do you get the meths into it? Picked this up in a junk shop this afternoon for 20 quid, washed the dirt and spiders out, quick once over with some brasso, stuck a Tilley mantle into it, and it just worked - no apparent leaks and ran it for an hour with no problems. However, with the mantle unlit, it was easy to put the meths in, but now I'm not sure how to relight it...how do I put the meths in? Thanks, Matthew
Use a meths can with a spout and the link below shows examples and it's possible to rig one. http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/1610
Using the type of can Jeff posted... You may just need to lift the glass a touch to get the spout in where the little notch is in the collar. I light it though that notch too using a gas lighter.
I use this. It's a nitro fuel filler bottle for RC cars etc. Got it on ebay for a couple of quid. Does the job perfectly.
IIRC, there's a small square cut-out in the globe support and you push the straight spout of a proper Bialaddin can through that to get meths into the preheater...
I've got one of those too - perfect for the Petromax and Optimus, but too big a tube to fit under the glass on this. I did try the proper Petromax filler I've got, but that got meths all inside the lamp, not just on the burner, so lighting was a little more dramatic that it should have been. I'll make a trip to local model shop and see if they do a smaller fuel filler, or maybe a small fuel tank for a model plane and a bit of brass tubing would do the trick.
Hi Matthew A large syringe from the pharmacy and a short length of clear pvc airtune from a pet store also works well. Enjoy your lamp! Regards, Jeremy
I tend to use a syringe for all of my lamps even though I have several meths bottles with filling tubes on them. Any size syringe will do but I prefer to use a ten cc one just because ten cc seems to be the perfect dose for lighting any of my Vapalux lamps and I don't need to faff about. I just draw until the syringe is full and squirt the whole lot into the dish. This is particularly handy on the 310 as it is quite hard to see how much meths is in the dish anyway and I can squirt in a dose without having to worry about overfilling it or there not being enough in to pre-heat it. I use a needle on mine, quite a large one called a drawing needle, which is used to draw up medicines out of the bottle they come in. It is not a needle actually intended to inject anyone with. I don't know how available they are though and a small piece of plastic pipe does the job. I have also managed with a short length of copper brake pipe attached to the syringe with insulation tape.
