I have just acquired this quite cheaply. I know it's not very exciting but the tank seems to be brass yet previous Tilley's I've had were steel. Is this common? Stamped 11/90 on the base which I assume is manufacturing date. What model is it please.
All that model Tilley (X246B) had brass tanks as far as I know. And all of the various Tilleys I have are brass (all obtained in Australia). Tony
Yeah, I've never known an X246B tank in anything other than brass - painted either red or gold and also plated. I think the millennium model was polished brass and lacquered...
There are one or two tiny spots of red in the creases so it was painted at some point. Thanks for the replies.
This sounds like it could be a 'plating failure'. Tanks that were initially plated but failed quality inspection were then painted to cover up the dud plating and subsequently sold as normal.
I've had 2 previous Tilley's. One was painted red. I thought it was steel but it could have been brass. Another I had, obviously an older model was 99% certain steel as I remember stripping the very chipped paint off and repainting it. Had it been brass I would not have repainted.
Tilley might have made a steel tank in the EX100 during the war years ?Shortage of brass I've got 2 steel EX100 tanks by Kayen. Bob .
