My Dad passed 12 years ago. He was an avid outdoorsman. I am going through his abundance of things. He had 3 Optimus 1550/550cp lanterns. 2 of them never used. I need help finding mantels. Also are these lanterns worth much money?
Hi rsumphrey I am not too familiar with this lantern but I would expect a Petromax 4/500 500cp single tie mantle would do. If i am wrong one of the better informed experts here will no doubt put me right. These mantles are available from Base Camp: http://www.base-camp.co.uk/Petromax/Petromax%20Spares%20Price%20List.htm In answer to your other question we do not give valuations on this forum, however I guess an unfired lantern such as yours may cause a bit of interest on an auction site. Better than selling, keep them as part of you collection and light the used one for pleasure and in memory of your late father. Happy lamping! Regards, Jeremy
Thanks Jeremey. No way would I ever part with my Father's belongings. He was my best friend and the best Father ever. He had lots of boy toys that are now in good hands. Happy Thanksgiving
Hopefully one of the US collectors can give some advice, but you need a 500cp bulb shaped type mantle. Many of the modern Chinese lanterns use this type of mantle, so they should be readily available.
Welcome aboard and check out the link below. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=optimus+mantles&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xpetromax+mantles.TRS0&_nkw=petromax+mantles&_sacat=0
Hi. Jeff's link to US eBay looks good to me, guess I should have checked your location! It would be nice to see some photos when you get them up and running. Regards, Jeremy
Ordered me 12. I thank you for the help. Tried to upload a few pics bit my pics are too big. I will have to figure that out.
If you're looking again, these mantles have done well by me: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Liberty-Round-Mantles-for-pressure-lantern-500-600-CP-20-in-pack-/281858237345 Optimus lanterns are uncommon here in the States, and a good indication that your father invested in good quality equipment.
