Just a enquiry as to the type of mantle most suited th the 246 range of stormlights to give the highest light output. Or just the readers preference as the metal happy mantle seems to be scarce and i seem to be having different results with one,s i have bought recently. Clive.
The ones that I use when I have my lamps running properly and want to use them for maximum light output are the premium X246 mantles from The Base Camp. I have many other kinds for the X246, but The Base Camp mantles seem to be consistently high quality. Tony
The type of mantle is one of the least important factors when determining light output. The 164H (Happy) mantle and 164X are equivalent when it comes to light output - it's just the manner of fixing that differs. The 164H was probably easier to attach when they were new. These days, the rings are usually rusted together which makes them a pain. I find the 164X (untied) the best to fit because they're adjustable. For that reason I tend to save them for use on other burners, though... (Y)
Thank you all for your replies, I have had various mantles supplied with lamps purchased which have now all been used up. I have seen 500 cp mantles advertised but i am not sure if these are suitable for these lamps. I feel that the problem is tube and burner wear rather than a mantle issue then. I will try exchanging hoods on to different lamps to see. Clive.
Update on mantle, Have changed complete tops over on two lamps that were showing marked light brightness differences and found that they still showed a colour specific to that mantle. ie.one is white like a halogen bulb and one has a colour temperature similar to a tungsten bulb. Not too much of a problem as its a nice warm light and quite pleasant rather than illuminating so I will stick with this combination of lamp and burner. May be a chemical difference. Clive.
Peerless have now also started manufacturing double tie mantles for the Tilley (and Bialaddin/Vapalux) I'm getting a few samples in my next shipment from the factory; should arrive during this coming week. Knowing Peerless, they should be at least as bright and durable as the best ones currently available
Are they Tilley specific... That would be a Pity. I assume that means that they are pre-tied like standard Tilley mantles? I wish they weren't, because then they would be useful to other lamps. Why pre-tie the mantles and make them useless for a large quantity of other brands? I like Peerless and would love to get some mantles from them to all "Primus 1001-serie" lamps.
Christer, I do not think they will be pre-tied: http://peerless-products.com/rosette-tie-mantle/ They do not show the DT-140 yet, but I presume it will look like the others. I would like to use them on my Primus 1015 also.
Ah! That's better news. When you said they were making mantles for Tilley, I thought they must have been specific for that brand. Then it looks like it's more the case of regular two-tie mantles, and thus much more versatile. That also make much more sense. Why limit the market to a few when you can address so many more. This is something I must try for my 1001-1015's.
I have been using the Peerless 111 and 24A mantles on my Tilleys and Bialaddins. I just push the closed end through the open end, cut it off and tie it onto the support spigot with a spare piece of mantle string. Then tie the top onto the burner as usual, and that's it. It forms a bit longer than the standard mantle but gives more light and lasts very well.
